James looked away and his gaze landed on her, catching the way her cheeks turned pink with embarrassment. “It’s nothing,” he said, slipping off his black suit jacket, still cold from outside, and hanging it on the rack by the door.

“You go rest. I’ll take care of this.”

Before she could protest, he was already making his way to the messy sofa, bending down to gather up the scattered papers. Emmy hesitated, about to say it was no trouble, but he was already sorting everything with practiced hands. He loosened his tie and tossed it over a chair, then undid his cuffs and rolled his sleeves to his elbows, showing a stretch of strong, lean arms.

She watched him from across the room, his broad back to her as he moved around her desk. He looked so at home that she didn’t know what to feel. The apartment was warm and toasty, heated air making everything soft and comfortable.

Emmy took off her trench coat and hung it up. “Um… I’ll go wash up then,” she said quietly.

Emmy felt a mixture of gratitude and exasperation. With a sigh, she grabbed her pajamas and slipped into the bathroom.

She showered, dried her hair, and changed into her coziest pajamas. When she came back out, she stopped, her eyes widening in surprise. The entire living area looked different. Where there had been chaos, there was now order. Books stood neatly lined up on the shelves, papers were stacked and organized on the edge of her desk. Even the random drafts on the carpet had been tucked under her paperweight. The clothes she had left at the end of the bed had disappeared too.

She found James standing at the bedroom door, holding her laundry basket filled with clothes. His shirt was a little rumpled, collar open just enough to reveal a bit of collarbone.

When he noticed her, he asked, “Is the washing machine in the bathroom?”
