Under the streetlight, John took a deep breath, trying to find the nerve, then finally looked up. “Mr. Nelson, about today… I’m really sorry.” His voice was tense, the words coming out in a rush. “It was me. I hired those guys on impulse and caused you all that trouble.”
He turned to Emmy, guilt plain on his face. “Emmy, I’m sorry.”
James raised his brows, honestly surprised. He wasn’t expecting the kid to actually own up to it. At least he had the guts to face the music. Instead of responding right away, James looked over at Emmy.
Emmy was caught off guard for a second. She remembered her classmates in the elevator that morning, all fired up to “help her out” and give James a hard time. Now it turned out John really had called people in for backup. His solution wasn’t exactly smart, but she could see he just genuinely wanted to stick up for her. And somehow, the annoyance she’d felt faded away.
“It’s okay,” Emmy said quietly, glancing over at John. “But you know now, right? I wasn’t kidding when I said nobody could take him on.”
John gave a sheepish, miserable smile, like he wanted to laugh but couldn’t. “Yeah… I figured that out.”
He hesitated, then added, “Tomorrow morning, let me buy you guys breakfast. Think of it as my apology.”
Before anyone else could reply, James spoke up, his voice smooth and steady. “No need. Breakfast is on me.”
John was stunned, looking at him out of habit. James slipped one hand into his pocket, his face calm but his tone offering no room for debate.
“I’ve reviewed your Janus Sphere Technologies contracts,” he said. “And as your future boss, it’s my job to treat my new employees to a meal.”
He paused for a moment, glancing at Emmy and then back at John. “Also, thanks for all the help you’ve given my wife with her coursework.”
Right away, John understood what this meant. This was more than just breakfast. It was the boss officially welcoming them—and quietly making boundaries clear. All John could do was nod.
“Okay, Mr. Nelson. I guess…I’ll get going then. See you tomorrow, Emmy.”
James followed her in, carrying their things, his eyes sweeping over her space like he was trying to take it all in at once. Even though Emmy had been at Harvard for almost half a year, this was the first time he’d actually been inside her dorm. Before, he’d only caught quick glimpses of the background during their video calls.
Now it was all laid out in front of him. The room was small, a bit crowded, every surface covered in books. The desk, the coffee table, even the corners of the sofa were piled with thick textbooks and research papers. There were several unopened packages on the floor, probably filled with electronics. Loose sheets of paper covered in messy algorithms were scattered across the pale rug. The whole place gave off the organized chaos of someone who works and studies nonstop. It was so packed, you had to watch where you stepped.
James took it all in with a slight lift of his brow.
Emmy took off her shoes and, catching his reaction, felt a flicker of embarrassment.
“It’s kind of a mess,” she admitted quietly. “I’ve been caught up with that algorithm model lately. Haven’t had much time to clean up.”
She looked away. “You’ll just have to deal with it for now.”
