Emmy leaned into his chest, rubbing at her temples where her headache throbbed. Her voice came out soft, almost melting.
“It’s nothing, really. Probably just too much thinking, I feel a little dizzy.”
She’d been caught up in meetings the minute they’d arrived at the resort and spent hours that night brainstorming with John. Now she was really wiped out.
Seeing how tired she looked, James’s heart ached for her. He crouched down in front of her.
“Hop on, I’ll carry you back.”
Emmy didn’t hesitate or even pretend to protest. She just climbed onto his back and wrapped her arms comfortably around his neck.
James held her steady, carrying not just her, but all her things too as he headed toward the elevator.
The hallway was completely quiet, everyone else tucked away for the night.
Emmy rested on his broad back, her thoughts drifting until she suddenly remembered something. She leaned in close to his ear and whispered,
“You really don’t mind me being alone with John?”
James kept his steps steady, his voice calm and measured.
“If I said I minded, would you actually stop seeing him alone?”
Emmy thought about it, but stayed silent. John was her partner for this project. There was no way to avoid working closely with him.
James gave a low chuckle, the sound full of warmth and understanding.
“Of course I mind. I’m still a normal guy, you know.”
He paused for a second before continuing, his voice even softer.
“But I get it now. What you have with John is all about that unique connection between people who really get technology. It’s not something that should be twisted by anyone else’s opinions.”
“Janus Sphere Technologies and all of AI research, really… need people like you two. The way your brains spark together, it’s irreplaceable.”
He turned his head just a bit, lowering his voice enough that only she could hear.
“I can’t let my own jealousy keep you from spreading your wings.”
Hearing all this, Emmy felt a weight lift right off her chest. All that bottled-up stress from the past couple of days just vanished.
She swung her legs playfully, hugging him a little tighter, her cheek pressed against his neck.
“Knew it. My husband is the best, always so understanding.”
James couldn’t help but smile. Just hearing her call him “husband” told him everything between them was okay again.
They returned to their top-floor suite.
James carefully set Emmy down on the bed and helped her take off her shoes.
“Try to rest. I’ve got a couple urgent things to handle in the study, but I’ll come to bed soon.”
…
She slept so deeply, she completely lost track of time.
When Emmy finally woke, sunlight was streaming through the slats in the curtains, lighting up the bed in golden stripes.
She sat up, hair a mess, still a little groggy. The other side of the bed was empty, sheets cool. James had clearly been up for ages.
She fumbled for her phone and checked the time.
“Oh my god, it’s already ten?”
She stared at the screen, completely shocked. There might not have been anything official on her schedule today, but as the boss’s wife, she really shouldn’t be sleeping half the morning away.
She leapt out of bed and sprinted into the bathroom. She was brushing her teeth when she heard knocking at the door.
Tap, tap, tap.
With toothpaste foam still in her mouth, Emmy shouted,
“Coming!”
She figured it was Harlene or maybe John, so she rinsed off, wiped her face, and scrambled to the door in her pajamas.
But when she yanked open the door and saw who was standing on the other side, she froze in place.
