Emmy sat lost in thought.

To be honest, she really didn't like Mercedes. The woman clearly had her own reasons for getting close to James, but she wasn’t the type to make a scene for no reason. Mercedes had introduced good contacts before, offered help, and even today, she claimed she was just looking out for Nico. It almost seemed like Mercedes actually wanted what was best for James, even if she was doing it partly out of selfishness and maybe even holding some hostility toward Emmy herself.

The more Emmy thought about it, the more uncomfortable she felt. What woman could truly be okay with someone else constantly keeping tabs on her husband? And Mercedes always did it under the guise of “helping,” like she was the only one who really understood James or could do something for him that Emmy couldn't. It made everything feel worse.

But right now, Janus Sphere Technologies needed all hands on deck, and Mercedes was their brand ambassador. Like she'd said, if things got out of hand between them, James would be caught in the middle and things would get ugly for him.

Emmy let out a little groan, annoyed. For James’s sake, she was willing to swallow her pride—just this once.

The operations center towered at the southern tip of the island, its sleek glass walls sparkling in the sunlight. As soon as Emmy walked into the lobby, she was surrounded by a buzz of energy, the sense that everyone was busy getting ready for something huge.

People were hurrying in and out. Phones kept ringing, keyboards clacked nonstop. Emmy meant to go handle a few things herself, but found out all the important stuff had already been sorted. She didn’t even have to guess—it had to be James.

She glanced through the floor-to-ceiling window of the VIP lounge and spotted him immediately. He looked sharp in a custom suit, sitting at the head of the conference table. Next to him was Rupert Voss, the CEO, and across from them sat a few foreign guests, all with blonde hair and bright blue eyes. James looked completely at ease, switching between English and Spanish like it was nothing.

He seemed to notice her watching. He turned, caught her eye through the glass, and suddenly that serious look of his softened. He gave her a small, reassuring nod.

Emmy couldn’t help but smile back.

Right then, Keaton hurried over. “Mrs. Lyon, you’re here.”

“The chairman is in the middle of a meeting with some marine ecology investors, so he can’t step out yet,” Keaton explained quickly. “But he just asked me to tell you, based on the schedule, your mom and your friends from back home are going to arrive any minute now. There’s nothing pressing here, so he’d like you to go greet them at the pier.”
