Abis’s fingers curled in at his side, and his eyes narrowed all at once.
Before he could get a word out, Emmy laughed, sounding completely casual.
“I think you’ve got the wrong idea, Mr. Abis.”
“The reason the buildings here look so futuristic? That’s all thanks to my husband.”
“He’s always had this amazing instinct for tech and the future. Most people can’t even keep up.”
She didn’t give him a chance to speak again. With a quick glance at her watch, she wiped the smile from her face and slipped right back into her usual cool, businesslike tone.
“Sorry, it’s getting late.”
“Mr. Abis, Mrs. Tyler, you both must be tired from the trip. Why don’t you head upstairs and get some rest?”
“I have work to take care of at the office, so I won’t be staying.”
She gave a polite nod and walked off without looking back.
The second she made it through the hotel’s spinning glass doors and into the shuttle, Emmy’s straight posture crumpled. Relief washed over her like a wave.
“Keaton, drive. Let’s get out of here.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As soon as the car started, Emmy slumped deep into the seat. Her hands clenched tight around the seat edges, her chest rising and falling. She felt completely off.
No matter what she did, Dean’s shadow was always there, right behind her.
Just now, she’d almost been sure. Abis was Dean.
But… that couldn’t be possible.
Emmy closed her eyes, her mind replaying every detail of Abis’s face.
He had short, slightly wavy brown hair and striking, sharp features—almost like someone who wasn’t fully local, with that mixed look. He was even taller than Dean, with a broader build.
They were two different people.
So where had things gone off track?
She pressed her fingers to her temples, feeling the ache and confusion build and twist until her thoughts were hopelessly tangled.
Keaton glanced back, worried.
“Ma’am, you don’t look well. Maybe I should take you back to the hotel so you can rest.”
Emmy forced herself to breathe deep. She opened her eyes, voice a little raspy. “No, that’s fine.”
She grabbed her phone and called Harlene.
“Harlene, where are you right now?”
“She used to be stalked and attacked by this creepy guy. He nearly killed her.”
“Her husband got revenge, used his military connections, and took care of the guy. Everyone thought he was dead. But now… it seems like he’s back.”
“He doesn’t look the same, sounds different, but my friend can’t shake the feeling… it’s still him.”
Harlene inhaled sharply and covered her mouth, shocked.
“Oh my god, that’s terrifying. Could it be some kind of surgery?”
Emmy shook her head.
“I don’t think so. Surgery takes forever to heal and it can’t make you taller or change your bone structure.”
“This guy is at least two inches taller. His whole frame is different.”
“There’s no way regular medicine can do that.”
John thought about it for a moment, growing more serious.
“If you’re talking about that level of change—height, bones and all—normal medical science can’t do it.”
“But if it’s something out of a secret lab, or black market bioengineering, maybe something a government’s developed in secret…”
Emmy focused on him, her voice steady and low. “Is that even possible?”
