The crew froze. Nobody had ever seen anything like this before. They glanced nervously at each other, not daring to make a sound. With that heavy tension in the air and James’s intimidating presence taking over the room, no one asked questions. One by one, they dropped what they were holding, rushing out of the bridge as fast as they could.
Emmy finally caught up, totally out of breath. She paused at the doorway to gather herself, then stepped in.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
James turned to face her, his dark eyes locked onto hers. He saw right away—she wasn’t the same girl who used to freeze under pressure. Even knowing there was a bomb hidden somewhere on this massive ship, maybe right under their feet, Emmy stayed calm. He put his hands on her shoulders. This time, he couldn't keep anything from her anymore. She needed to know everything if they were going to get through this together.
“The dive team just checked in. They found a new kind of high-powered liquid bomb inside the main propeller shaft.”
Emmy’s eyes went wide with shock. She stared at him, barely able to process it.
James’s grip grew a little tighter. His voice dropped to a steady, serious tone.
“This bomb is linked to a motion sensor. The second those propellers start spinning, the centrifugal force will trigger it. It’ll blow up the main power core. If that happens, we lose all power, and the blast will rip open the hull. Water will rush in before we can even react... GlowOcean will go straight down, no question.”
Emmy took in a shaky breath. She looked grimmer than ever.
James’s eyes stayed locked on hers, urgent but steady.
“For your safety, for everyone’s safety, you need to help evacuate the ship now.”
Emmy didn’t wait for him to finish.
“Is there really no other way?” she blurted out. After a quick pause, she rushed on.
“The whole ship is packed with VIPs and diplomats. The world is watching us right now. If we order everyone off the ship with no warning, there’ll be a scandal. All the work, all the planning... everything will be ruined.”
James just stared at her for a moment, the stubborn spark in her eyes holding his attention.
“So, are you willing to take a risk with me?” he asked, his voice quiet but sure.
“Alright. Go. But you have to be careful.”
With her trust behind him, James didn’t waste another second. He let go of her hand, crossed to the corner, and pulled open the diving equipment locker. In one smooth motion, he took off his shirt and pants, pulled on a black wetsuit, and strapped the tool kit securely to his leg.
Emmy stood aside, her heart hammering as she watched him calmly check his oxygen tank and regulator. Everything ready, James grabbed his fins and stepped out onto the open deck.
He swung himself up onto the rail, but Emmy ran after him before he could jump. “Be safe. I’ll be waiting for you.” Her voice trembled and she was blinking back tears.
James looked down at her, giving her a look that said everything he couldn’t put into words.
“I’ll be back soon. I promise.”
He pulled on his goggles, leaned backward, and with a quiet splash, hit the water. His dark figure cut through the surface and disappeared into the deep, endless blue.
