The wind rushed in, wild and cold. Before Emmy could even get annoyed, James spoke up behind her again, his voice soft and reassuring. “Take another minute, okay? Calm down for me, sweetheart.”
Her heart was pounding. Her legs felt like jelly. She swallowed hard, trying to steady herself. “Just... give me a bit longer...”
This time, James was all patience. He shifted a little, pulled her closer, and just like that, Emmy felt totally safe in his arms.
A minute flew by.
“Alright, you have to do what I say now.” He raised his voice over the noise. “Deep breath.”
Emmy didn’t even think, she just obeyed, drawing in a shaky breath and letting it out.
“Again. Big, deep breath.”
She sucked in another one, chest tight with nerves.
And right in that instant, before she had a chance to protest, James bent his knees and jumped.
She screamed. Pure reflex—there was no time to prepare, no chance to catch her wits. Suddenly she was flying.
Her stomach dropped, the ground vanished beneath her, and the air roared in her ears. The wind pressed so hard against her face she couldn’t keep her eyes open, so all she could do was scream her lungs out.
It sounded like the world was tearing at her, a piercing shriek in her ears. Every muscle in her body was so tense, she could barely think.
Meanwhile, James was totally at ease. He controlled their bodies like they weighed nothing, and he actually had the nerve to shout over to her, “How’s this feel? Want to try spinning or flipping?”
She couldn’t make out a word. Her mind was a total blank, the wind and fear eating up everything but the urge to squeeze her eyes shut and scream.
James must have realized how terrified she was, because he gave up on the flips and tricks. He steadied their descent, adjusting so they dropped as smoothly as possible.
He ducked his head down, mouth near her helmet, and somehow his voice cut right through the chaos. “Don’t be scared. I’m here. I promise, nothing will happen to you.”
“Try opening your eyes—look down. The view’s incredible.”
His calm, warm voice seeped into her like magic, steadying the panic in her chest.
Her heart slowed. She stopped screaming for a second.
Little by little, with James reassuring her over and over, she screwed up the courage to open one eye, just a crack.
The moment her feet hit the ground, Emmy’s legs buckled. She nearly folded right down but James caught her around the waist, holding her steady.
He pulled off his helmet, shaking out sweaty hair, his dark eyes locked right on her. “So? Tell me. How was it?”
Emmy gulped in air, needing a moment. Slowly, her soul seemed to drift back into her body.
She glanced up. The fear in her eyes had changed into something wild and bright. “It was amazing!”
Her whole body was still fizzing, adrenaline surging everywhere. It felt like she’d died and come right back to life—she never wanted to let the feeling go.
She grabbed James’s arm with both hands, looked up hopefully. “Can we go again? I want to do it again!”
James blinked, clearly surprised. Not long ago, she’d been terrified. Now she was addicted.
He checked his watch and gave a regretful little shake of his head. “Not today, I’m afraid. It’s getting late, and the airspace is about to close.”
He started helping her out of her harness, working quickly but carefully. “Let’s get you something to eat. You need rest after that.”
He smiled and added, “Tomorrow morning, I’ll take you up again. You can have all the jumps you want.”
