Emmy let out a little pout, looking disappointed, but nodded in agreement.
As soon as all the gear was finally off and that thrill faded, exhaustion came crashing over her like a wave. The cliff dive had already sapped so much of her energy, and now the skydive had wrung her out completely.
She tried to take a couple of steps, but everything ached. Her bones felt like they could fall apart, and her legs were so heavy it was like someone had filled them with lead. She wobbled and nearly lost her balance.
James had kept an eye on her the whole time. When he saw her stumble, he immediately stepped in front of her and crouched down, his back turned.
He looked over his shoulder, his voice soft and warm. “Come on. Hop on, I’ll carry you.”
Emmy didn’t even think to refuse. She seriously couldn’t take another step.
She climbed onto his back like a koala, her arms sliding easily around his neck and her cheek pressed against the heat of his skin.
James hooked his hands under the bend of her knees and stood up with barely any effort, walking through the sand toward the hotel with her on his back.
The last golden sunlight stretched their shadows long across the beach. A salty breeze drifted in, cool and gentle, carrying the scent of the ocean.
It wasn’t long before James felt the steady rise and fall of Emmy’s breath against his neck. She’d actually fallen asleep right there on his back. She really was worn out from everything over the last couple of days.
Not far away, a resort shuttle waited, engine running, just in case. The driver started to bring it over, catching sight of them.
James gave a small shake of his head, signaling the driver to stay put. He couldn’t bring himself to wake her, and honestly, he just wanted this moment. To walk with her like this, slow and unhurried.
Evening had fallen, and there were still plenty of people wandering along the beach. As James passed with Emmy on his back, people couldn’t help but stare, their eyes full of envy.
“Wait, isn’t that Mr. Nelson and Mr. Lincoln from the resort?” someone whispered.
“They look so sweet together. He’s actually carrying her the whole way?”
“No wonder they run such a big business. This must be what people mean by a real power couple,” someone else said.
Abis was there, dressed down and almost unnoticeable, cap pulled low and dark sunglasses hiding the intensity in his eyes. He watched James walk away with Emmy sleeping on his back, her guard completely down.
His fingers clenched so tightly they dug into his palms.
He just couldn’t understand it. Both he and James had lied to Emmy, so why was James always forgiven? With himself, Emmy was only ever cold and distant.
He turned away suddenly and spoke to his assistant in a chilly voice. “Did you handle everything I asked for?”
The assistant ducked his head, clearly nervous. “Everything’s in place, sir. This time it’ll go perfectly.”
“All the details are set. As soon as the moment comes, you step in and be the hero. Mr. Lincoln will be thankful for life. He’ll see you as his savior.”
Abis’s eyes flickered at this. He looked back at the couple disappearing further down the beach, a strange smile tugging at his lips.
Emmy, soon you’ll understand who’s really meant to protect you.
