Everyone around fell into silence. James’s expression darkened, his gaze turning cold and unreadable.
He didn’t ask any more questions. Without hesitation, he vaulted over the railing and landed on the rescue boat nearby. Lying motionless in the middle of the deck was a body, clothes and hair drenched by the sea.
It was Penny.
She looked peaceful, but her skin was ghostly pale, drained of all color. The wound on her abdomen—deep and jagged, the edges bleached and swollen from seawater—was hard to look at. It spoke silently of the brutal fight she must have gone through before she died. In the end, it was the loss of blood and exhaustion that drowned her in the deep.
James stood there in front of Penny. Usually proud and distant, he now had nothing but respect and sorrow in his eyes. He closed them for a moment and stood straight, feet together. Turning into the wind, he gave her a long, solemn bow.
Major General Calony climbed onto the deck after him. When he saw Penny’s wound and the way her fists were still clenched, even in death, his own expression became even more serious.
He walked up to James, his voice heavy with a mix of guilt and apology. “Mr. Nelson, I’m so sorry. This is on me. Don’t worry—I’ll make it right. I’ll find you an even better bodyguard. The best there is.”
James straightened and shot him a frosty look.
“That’s not necessary.”
With those few words, he turned to his men. “Let everyone know. Take care of Penny, make sure she is taken home to the White family with dignity.”

In the room next door, Mercedes was the first to come to. As soon as she opened her eyes, pain stabbed through her wrist. She started screaming at the top of her lungs, crying for James.
But James never left Emmy’s side. He sat by her bed, refusing to move. There was stubble on his chin, his suit hopelessly wrinkled, but he didn’t care.
After a while, the door opened and Major General Calony came in, a report in his hands.
