Everyone around fell into silence. James’s expression darkened, his gaze turning cold and unreadable.

He didn’t ask any more questions. Without hesitation, he vaulted over the railing and landed on the rescue boat nearby. Lying motionless in the middle of the deck was a body, clothes and hair drenched by the sea.

It was Penny.

She looked peaceful, but her skin was ghostly pale, drained of all color. The wound on her abdomen—deep and jagged, the edges bleached and swollen from seawater—was hard to look at.
