Emmy slept very restlessly that night. Her dreams were filled with bizarre fragments, alternating between the figure swimming toward her in the deep sea and the sight of her mother being forcibly taken away from St. Peter's Cathedral.
When she jolted awake, the sky outside was just beginning to turn the color of a fish's belly. The feeling of panic did not dissipate with her awakening. Instead, it grew heavier in the surrounding silence. She instinctively reached for her phone, hoping to see if any news had come from James, even if it was just a short message saying he was safe. But the screen was completely empty.
Emmy sat blankly on the bed for a while, unable to lie back down. She draped a coat over her shoulders, pushed open the bedroom door, and walked out. Just as she reached the top of the stairs, she heard a suppressed yet lively commotion coming from downstairs.
Surprised, she walked down the stairs. The front doors were wide open, letting in a crisp, cold wind mixed with the scent of snow. Brett was busy working with several young men in camouflage uniforms. Someone was on a ladder hanging bright red festive ornaments. Another held a brush, pasting holiday decorations on the marble pillars. Others were stringing colored lights onto the bare old trees outside the castle. The originally cold and stern place had forcefully been adorned with a touch of worldly warmth by all this red.
Hearing footsteps, Brett turned his head. Seeing Emmy, his consistently tense face broke into a massive smile, revealing a set of bright white teeth. "Morning, ma'am!"
The other young soldiers also turned their heads, full of energy as they shouted at the top of their lungs. "Hello, ma'am! Happy holidays!" Their loud voices shook the snow right off the tree branches.
Emmy froze in place. She stared at the splashes of red, dazed for several seconds. Right. Today was the eve of the biggest holiday of the year. On this day meant for family reunions, James and her mother still had not returned.
The sour ache welled up in her heart again. She pressed her lips together and managed a gentle smile. "Happy holidays. Thank you for your hard work, everyone."
After speaking, she pulled her coat tighter and stepped outside. It had snowed all night, leaving a thin layer of white on the ground. A young soldier with a red, freezing nose was enthusiastically sweeping snow with a large broom. Emmy walked over and picked up a broom from the pile of tools.
"Ma'am! You can't do that!" The young soldier jumped in fright, quickly tossing his own broom aside to grab hers. "How can we let you do rough work like this! Please go inside and rest, it is cold out here!"
Brett took a few long strides over, looking tense. "Ma'am, if Captain James finds out about this, he will skin me alive."
