"Ma'am? Why did you come in?" Jada, who was preparing ingredients, jumped in surprise. She quickly wiped her hands and hurried over. "There is a lot of smoke and grease in here. Please go back out. I can handle the holiday feast tonight all by myself."
Emmy rolled up her sleeves, took an apron down from the rack, and tied it on. "Jada, I want to cook a few dishes for the children."
Over the past year, she had missed far too many moments of her children's growth. Now that she was finally reunited with them, she wished she could offer them the best things in the world. She was a good cook, so she wanted to make a few of their favorite dishes on this special day.
Emmy opened the refrigerator, took out her phone, and searched online for a few baby food recipes suitable for toddlers. Before long, the aroma of food gradually drifted out of the kitchen.
By evening, the sky gradually darkened. The lanterns outside the castle all lit up, reflecting against the white snow on the ground and exuding a festive holiday atmosphere.
The long table in the dining room was filled with a sumptuous feast. It was a table of exquisite dishes made by Jada using her best skills, perfect in color, aroma, and taste. Near the head of the table sat a few delicate little bowls containing the baby food Emmy had made herself.
However, the massive dining room felt incredibly empty. Emmy held Dolly, while Joey sat in the high chair next to them.
She looked at Jada standing to the side and said softly. "Jada, please sit down and eat with us."
Jada waved her hands repeatedly. "Oh, no, no, I cannot. I am here to take care of you, the young master, and the young miss. How could I sit at the same table as the hosts?"
Feeling helpless, Emmy looked out the door. Brett and a few of his brothers were standing guard at the entrance, standing straight and keeping their eyes fixed forward.
"Brett, you all should come inside too," Emmy called out.
Brett grinned, but he shook his head. "Ma'am, it is fine for us to eat outside. This is discipline. Besides, there are so many of us we would not fit inside anyway. You will eat with peace of mind knowing we are standing guard out here."
No matter what Emmy said, they simply refused to cross that line. Emmy looked at the table full of rich food, then at the empty space beside her. The master of the house who should have been sitting there still had no news. Her mother, who should have been sitting across from her looking lovingly at her grandchildren, was also missing.
She originally thought she could have a proper reunion with her mother and children this year, spending a truly good holiday together. She never expected things to be so unpredictable. This time, it was her turn to guard this table of cold loneliness, waiting with two clueless children for someone who might return at an unknown time. This feeling of waiting was like a dull knife slowly grinding against the heart. Only those who had truly experienced it knew how unbearable it was.
