"Those mercenaries really didn't harm Laney," Andrew explained. "They captured her to use as leverage, hoping to trade her for the complete bionic system code from me. They've been secretly developing a bionic system for months, but produced countless failures. It was simply because their technology wasn't mature enough, but those uneducated thugs assumed the system data they stole was incomplete."
Andrew let out a cold laugh. "Once I figured out their background, I played along. I had my team copy a flawed, obsolete version of the bionic system. Then I brought that fake system to negotiate for Laney."
At this, Andrew's expression grew incredibly solemn. "The plan didn't go as smoothly as I hoped. Those thugs were far too cunning. They actually demanded their technicians run a live feasibility test of the system right there on the spot! Thankfully, we ran into James, who had been brought there under the coercion of the cartel's forces. If he hadn't secretly covered for us, we probably wouldn't have made it out."
Emmy's heart clenched. "What did James do?"
Andrew took a deep breath. "Using his status as the groom-to-be, James created a significant distraction at the critical moment. He disrupted their testing process and gave us the window we needed to escape." His eyes filled with guilt and heaviness. "But by doing so, I'm afraid those men will suspect him even more. His situation is bound to become even more perilous. He knew this perfectly well, which was why the second he escorted us out, he urged us to leave immediately, without wasting a single second. To avoid dragging him down, I had no choice but to grab Laney and pull out. Unexpectedly, just a few miles down the road, we were ambushed by another faction. Most of the men I brought died trying to protect us."
Andrew's eyes grew red. "We practically waded through blood to escape the controlled zone of the Caleba Delta and barely escaped with our lives." He turned to look at Emmy, his tone sterner than ever. "Do you understand now, Emmy? You absolutely cannot go to the Delta! That hellhole doesn't care about your background or your nationality. Anyone who steps foot in there leaves half their life behind."
Listening to his words, Emmy lowered her eyelashes, masking the emotions in her eyes. Wrapped tightly like a caterpillar, Laney stared eagerly at Emmy through her messy hair. She tried to squirm, but the blanket was wrapped so tight she couldn't even free her hands. She could only wiggle her body in frustration.
