Andrew had apparently been so afraid she would slip away early that he had staked out the wall directly opposite her bedroom door. The bloody escape and extreme tension of the past few days had likely completely drained his energy. Leaning against the baseboard, he had fallen into a deep slumber.
Emmy pursed her lips, a wave of guilt washing over her. She looked up at her approaching guards and Nina, putting a finger to her lips in a silencing gesture. Then, she pulled a note she had written the night before from her pocket, bent down, and carefully slipped the paper into Andrew's coat. With that done, she and her team quietly slipped out of the hotel.
By the time Andrew jolted awake from his sleep, the sky outside was fully bright. He instinctively looked up at the door opposite him. It was wide open, the room completely empty. His heart sank. The moment he raised his arm to push himself up, a folded piece of white paper slipped from his chest. He grabbed it and quickly scanned the handwriting.
[I'm sorry. I still have things I must do, so I have to go on ahead. Please don't worry about me. Get Laney to safety as soon as possible. If all goes well, I'll be out soon too.]
Andrew scrambled to his feet and sprinted outside. The muddy courtyard was empty. The convoy that had been parked there was long gone. He grabbed one of his subordinates, roaring with bloodshot eyes. "Where are they? When did they leave?"
The subordinate stammered a reply. "Boss... they drove off before dawn."
Andrew shoved the man aside and turned to stare in the direction of the Caleba Delta. His brows locked together in a tight knot, his eyes brimming with panic and regret.
...
Meanwhile, Emmy's convoy had officially entered the Nelia Caleba Delta. The cruelty of the place far exceeded their imaginations. The moment they crossed into the zone, deafening artillery fire rained down on them. Dense stray bullets and shrapnel flew wildly through the air. The armed militants here didn't care what kind of cars they drove or what passports they held. They shot at anyone in sight.
