The armored off-road vehicle bounced violently along the rugged dirt paths for nearly two hours. The air gradually grew thick with the sharp, salty stench of the ocean, signaling their arrival at the coastline.
Rolling her window down just an inch, Emmy immediately spotted a luxurious yacht anchored in the nearby bay. Major General Calony, dressed in a pristine military uniform, stood tall on the front deck. The moment he saw Emmy step out of the vehicle, he plastered a welcoming smile on his face and waved her over. "Ms. Lincoln, over here!"
Emmy pulled her black windbreaker tighter around herself and strode purposefully onto the yacht with Nina close behind. Barrett and his men swarmed in after them, rapidly setting up a secure perimeter. A low, resonant blast from the ship's horn signaled their departure, and the yacht glided smoothly away from the coast, cutting deep into the open waters.
Calony's smile instantly vanished the moment he spotted the girl trailing Emmy, his eyebrows knotting into a vicious tangle. "Ms. Lincoln, this girl cannot go to the venue."
Emmy stopped dead in her tracks, her hand shooting out to lock firmly around Nina's wrist. "Why not? She is my personal bodyguard. She is strictly responsible for my safety. If this is truly James's plan, he knows my current condition better than anyone. He would never, ever allow me to walk into a place that dangerous completely alone."
Her words slammed into Calony's chest, leaving him temporarily speechless. The truth was, he was terrifyingly guilty. He was paranoid that James would instantly realize he had brought the real Emmy instead of the android. If Emmy showed up entirely alone, James might just assume she was the machine. But if she walked in with her highly conspicuous female bodyguard in tow, that elite soldier, a man far more cunning than a fox, would shatter the illusion in a heartbeat.
Yet, seeing the unyielding iron in Emmy's posture, Calony knew he couldn't afford to push her into open rebellion right now. He forced a strained compromise. "Fine, bring her along."
He gestured toward the interior of the ship's cabin. "You've been rushing all morning, you haven't had breakfast yet, right? Go inside and eat something. We're about to enter the core sector, and once we're there, there will be far too many eyes on us. It won't be convenient to eat."
Though Emmy had eaten back at the camp, the two hours of violently bumpy roads had left her feeling nauseous and slightly hollow. She didn't argue, simply pulling Nina along as she followed Calony into the cabin.
As they walked, Emmy's sharp eyes swept over the highly sophisticated defense systems rigged around the yacht, her brow furrowing slightly. "Major General, since this location is perfectly accessible by water, why didn't you just let me travel by sea from the very beginning?" The past two days of overland travel had been agonizingly grueling, riddled with horrific roads and the constant, looming threat of ambushes from rival warlords.
