Calony casually tossed his napkin onto the table, leaning back in his chair and throwing his hands up in a dismissive shrug. "My apologies, Ms. Lincoln. She simply passed out. A good nap will sort her out. I told you, she cannot go to the venue. Bringing dead weight will only ruin everything." He met Emmy's furious, burning glare with absolute, arrogant certainty. "Once today's business is entirely concluded, you will finally understand my good intentions."
Emmy squeezed her hands into tight fists. In this chilling moment, her suspicion that Calony had fundamentally betrayed his alliance with James only deepened. Yet, she simply couldn't decipher his endgame. If she died here today, Calony stood to gain absolutely nothing. But right now, trapped on his ship with Nina drugged and unconscious, she was backed entirely into a corner. With no avenue for escape, Emmy had no choice but to forcefully bury her suspicions deep in her chest and follow Calony to the wedding banquet.
Hector's daughter's wedding was hosted on another vessel, a gargantuan, fortress-like mega-yacht anchored at the center of the bay.
The massive deck was teeming with guests who had arrived from all corners of the world to offer their congratulations. The crowd was a dense mix of impeccably dressed corporate tycoons and vicious, heavily scarred warlords.
Emmy, still clad in her simple black windbreaker, walked alongside the sharply dressed Major General Calony. The two of them perfectly embodied the standard, highly visible alliance between a corporate powerhouse and military muscle. To project an image of trust and sincerity, Calony had only brought Barrett and a very small contingent of guards.
They were stopped at the main entrance, forced to wait in a long line for the security checkpoint.
Looking at the highly advanced metal and live-tissue biometric scanners erected ahead of them, a smug, triumphant smirk crept onto Calony's lips. That old fox, Hector, had really locked this place down tight, going so far as to mandate live-tissue scanning. If he had actually listened to James and brought the android, they wouldn't have even made it past the first checkpoint before being instantly exposed.
The line slowly inched forward.
Just as Calony prepared to lead Emmy through the scanners, a violent commotion erupted in the crowd just to the side of the checkpoint.
"Stop pushing!"
"Who the hell shoved me? Do you have a death wish?"
A group of heavily intoxicated mercenaries began aggressively shoving each other. The area instantly spiraled into chaos, curses and threats flying thick through the air.
