Emmy hid in a narrow, dark crevice of the reef for over two hours. Her calves were soaking in the seawater, so freezing that they were almost numb. When the sounds of the search outside had completely died down, she finally used the cover of night to struggle out. She just wanted to get out of this hellhole and find James.
But before she could take more than a few steps along the slippery rocks, a subtle, dragging pain suddenly pierced deep into her lower abdomen. The sudden pain shot through her nerves, stopping her dead in her tracks. Covered in a cold sweat, Emmy carefully felt her way behind a massive, dry boulder untouched by the rising tide. She leaned against the rough stone wall and slowly crouched down. She knew the baby was in distress.
Her nerves had been stretched to the breaking point all day. Kidnapped by that lunatic Dean, fleeing for her life through a heavily guarded laboratory, and dodging capture at every turn. After being soaked in the freezing seawater, it was a miracle her baby had held out this long before finally protesting. She panted heavily, pressing her uninjured left hand over her swollen belly. In her heart, she coaxed the little life inside her over and over, her eyes burning with unshed tears.
"Don't be afraid, baby... Mommy's right here," she whispered. "You've been so good and so brave. Just hold on a little longer, okay? Daddy must be looking for us. He's so incredible. He'll definitely find us soon. We just need to hold on together."
Whether it was the power of suggestion or not, the tight, dragging ache in her belly actually began to ease. But what followed was an overwhelming wave of exhaustion. She was too tired. Her eyelids felt as heavy as lead, and her vision started to go dark in patches. Her brain uncontrollably wanted to shut down all her senses and let her fall into a deep sleep.
Just as her heavy eyelids were about to close, the deafening roar of helicopter rotors suddenly ripped through the night sky. She forced her eyes open and faintly saw two helicopters flying low over the reef. They weren't flying high, and the side door of one of them was wide open.
In the dim light and fierce wind stood a tall, commanding figure. Dressed in full tactical combat gear and clutching an assault rifle, he looked like a crouching panther, radiating an oppressive aura from the edge of the cabin door. She didn't even need to see his face. Relying purely on intuition, Emmy recognized him instantly. A faint glimmer of light burst into her fading eyes. Using the absolute last ounce of her strength, she struggled to raise her hand toward the helicopter. But she was so exhausted she could barely string together a sentence.
"I'm here... Honey, I'm here..."
But the helicopter flew past too quickly. Her suspended hand finally lost its strength and dropped limply to her side.
Up in that very helicopter stood James, newly clad in full combat gear and looking like a god of war descended to unleash hell. The aircraft flew incredibly low over the ocean surface, pushing its speed to the absolute limit. The violent wind whipped his tactical uniform, but his dark eyes, hidden behind combat goggles, were bloodshot and brimming with a ruthless, unstoppable bloodlust.
