While a group of young men clustered together, eagerly debating when to set off, a woman in ragged clothes cautiously approached Emmy. Seeing her pale face, the woman pulled half a ration bar from her pocket and offered it to her.

"Miss, you look like you're in a lot of pain. Have something to eat."

Emmy was truly starving. Her stomach had been empty for a long time, and the acidic bile churning inside burned terribly. Suppressing her discomfort, she reached out and took the half piece of ration bar.

Her face turned pale as paper. Turning her head sharply, she could no longer stop the violent wave of dry heaving.

But before she could even spit out the bite she had just taken, the woman lunged forward and clamped a hand over her mouth.

"You can't throw up. You absolutely cannot throw up. If you throw up, you won't have any food left. Out here, food is more precious than your life."

Tears of absolute misery welled up in Emmy's eyes. But as she stared into the woman's dead-serious eyes... eyes that were sweating with desperation over half a cracker... she suddenly snapped to her senses. This was the dog-eat-dog triangular coast.
