Emmy blinked in surprise. “Mom, why would you even think that?”
Teresa gave a sharp little laugh, her eyes clear and steady.
“After you and James left last night, I took the medicine Dr. Hall gave me and slept like a log. Next thing I knew, I woke up already on the operating table. Dr. Hall kept telling me not to worry, said it was just a minor thing, and that I’d be back in my room as soon as the IV was done.”
“I honestly felt fine, but then she made a big deal about calling you into her office, like something was seriously wrong with me.”
Her voice turned anxious. “Emmy, don’t trust her, alright? Maybe we should just transfer to another hospital, right now.”
Emmy gave a helpless smile, reaching out to gently smooth her mom’s hair.
“Mom, if you trust me, can you just try not to ask anything for now? Just stay here and rest until the hearing on Monday. That’s all I need.”
Teresa looked her straight in the eye and nodded firmly. “Of course I trust you. You’re my daughter.”
But she still couldn’t hide her worry. “It’s just… you really don’t think Dr. Hall is in someone’s pocket? I’m scared something will go wrong before the trial, some accident or—”
Emmy leaned in close, whispering so only Teresa could hear. “Maybe there were surprises before, but starting today, nothing else is going to happen.”
Abriella slid over, eager to help cheer her up.
“Aunt Teresa, don’t worry! There’s no way anything will go wrong at the hearing this time!”
“Shh, keep your voice down,” Emmy cut in, nodding towards the door.
Abriella immediately clapped a hand over her mouth, then lowered her voice to a whisper.
“My boss is going to court in person! He’s a top attorney—never lost a case! That jerk is definitely going to jail, maybe even for life. If we’re lucky, he’ll get the death penalty.”
Emmy motioned for Ivy to step aside with her, her tone turning serious.
“Ivy, I need you to stick with my mom every second for the next few days. Don’t leave the room, no matter what.”
“If you need anything, have the bodyguards outside get it for you. Just hold on a little longer.”
Her gaze sharpened.
“And make sure the room and the balcony get cleaned thoroughly every day. I mean every corner—don’t leave anywhere unchecked. Watch out for hidden mics or anything suspicious.”
Ivy’s expression turned determined as she nodded.
“Don’t worry, Miss Emmy. I’m on it. I watch every doctor and nurse who comes in, never take my eyes off them. After morning rounds, I clean everything again, top to bottom. Not even a single hair could hide from me.”
Emmy nodded, satisfied.
“Thank you. You can go home now.”
She turned to the bodyguards at the door.
“Wait for me outside, please.”
Once the dining room doors closed, it was just her and the three board members, all of them looking serious.
The oldest, his hair white as snow, frowned in confusion.
“Emmy, what’s going on here?”
Another board member sounded more concerned.
“I thought your mother was already up and walking. How could she be critically ill?”
Emmy stood, her tone apologetic but steady.
“Grandpa Buckley, Grandpa Carter, Mr. Hart, the reason I called you here so urgently today is because there’s something important I need to discuss with you.”
“My mother is perfectly fine, and recovering well. I’m sorry for worrying you.”

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
