Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 768

The bodyguards and Lorraine fell silent and hurried out of the car.

The door slammed shut behind them.

Suddenly it was just the two of them, shut in together.

For a moment, Emmy just stared at him, caught off guard. Seeing him like this, looking every bit the powerful CEO, always threw her for a loop. In front of her was Mr. Nelson, but at the same time, he was James—the man who would run straight into a burning building without a second thought.

She opened her mouth to ask why he was here, but before she could say a word, James leaned in and hugged her tight.

His voice was low and shaky, full of a panic he was clearly trying to hide as he whispered in her ear.

“We’re not getting a divorce.”

“Don’t even think about it. Not a single thought.”

“Emmy, you and I are never getting divorced. Never.”

Emmy froze, every muscle tensing. He must have heard her conversation with Jared. There was no other way he could know.

She hesitated, then slowly hugged him back, her hands settling on his broad back. Instead of the usual comfortable clothes he wore at home, she felt expensive, perfectly smooth wool under her fingertips.

She gave his back a gentle, reassuring pat. Twice.

“Let me go first. It’s... uncomfortable like this,” she said softly.

Immediately, his arms dropped away. James stepped back and looked her over, worry storming behind his dark eyes. Seeing him like that made Emmy’s heart twist with both tenderness and frustration.

She sighed and softened her voice.

“I only said that for the head of the Nelson family to hear. You don’t need to take it seriously.”

Even with her explanation, the worry in James’s eyes didn’t let up at all.

He was someone who always had everything under control, confident and steady no matter what. But when it came to Emmy, all that certainty just vanished. She was the one thing he could never predict and never feel secure about.

Something inside Emmy softened too, and her tone grew even gentler.

“You should go.”

“If something happens, you can text me... or call.”

She looked him in the eye and added seriously, “Don’t be so impulsive next time.”

But even as she said it, Emmy couldn’t help laughing at herself inside. She’d been just as impulsive a moment ago, defending James in front of Jared. She’d even thrown out the word “divorce” just to keep Jared from digging deeper. Clearly, she could be reckless for him too.

As soon as she got home to Applewood Estate, Emmy headed straight for the safe in her closet. She dug through her jewelry until she found the forgotten strawberry quartz bracelet.

Under the lights, the pink stones glowed softly. They weren’t as flashy as diamonds, but there was a gentle warmth to them that felt almost magical.

James probably just wanted to get her something for her birthday and, in his straightforward way, ended up bidding on the most eye-catching piece at the auction.

Emmy smiled to herself and slipped both bracelets onto her left wrist—one cool and dazzling, the other warm and soft.

Then she remembered something. She rummaged to the bottom of the safe and pulled out a dark red booklet.

James’s registration book. He’d given it to her once, and she’d tucked it away and forgotten about it.

She opened it and found his birthdate.

Emmy’s breath caught.

His birthday was the exact same day as her due date.

What were the odds?

Was this fate? Or just some crazy coincidence?
