A striking, impossibly handsome face appeared in her line of sight, catching her completely off guard. His eyes were rimmed with red from too many sleepless nights, and a shadow of dark stubble covered his jaw. Instead of making him look worn out, it only added to his wild, mature, and dangerously sexy vibe.

Emmy stared at him, frozen, for several seconds. It took her that long to realize she wasn’t dreaming. Then everything hit her at once. She couldn’t hold it in any longer. She threw herself at him, arms winding tight around his neck, and buried her face against the warm curve of his shoulder. The tears came in waves.

“I have stretch marks now. My belly looks so ugly. I’m never going to be pretty again.” Her voice was shaky and desperate. “What am I supposed to do? Am I ever going to look like I used to?” She hiccuped and sobbed, her words tumbling out. “I’m just so ugly now.”

James let her cling to him, his big hand moving slowly and gently over her trembling back, calm and steady. He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his voice low and deep.

“You’re beautiful, no matter what.”

“In my eyes, you’ve always been the most beautiful.”

She cried in his arms for what felt like forever, soaking his shoulder with her tears. When the worst of it finally passed and she could breathe again, her thoughts started to clear. Pulling back, voice thick and nasal, she peered up at him. “How are you even here? If anyone from the Nelson family finds out...”

James picked up the glass of warm water that Lorraine must have brought in earlier and held it to her lips. “Drink some water first.”

After she took a few sips, he finally answered. “I climbed the wall and came in through the window.”

Emmy held the cup, her gaze lingering on the red in his eyes. “You’re not sleeping again, are you?” Her voice was full of worry.

“It’s just been busy,” James replied. He reached up and gently wiped away the tear at the corner of her eye. “Don’t worry about me.”

But Emmy knew. She’d heard all about the shakeups at Nelson Corporation. Everyone was tense, waiting for the next big decision. Suddenly, she reached out and grabbed his tie, yanking him down toward her. She lifted her chin, ready to kiss him.

Right at the last second, James turned his head. Her lips landed against his rough, stubbly jaw. The prickly sensation stung.

“Ow.” She winced, covering her mouth, tears threatening to spill over again, her eyes glistening with fresh hurt.

He smoothed her gown back into place, tucked the blanket around her, and pulled her close again. Resting his chin on her head, he whispered, barely making a sound, his voice rough with emotion.
