The light here was just too dim.
Teresa couldn’t see anything except the shadows of the trees swaying in the breeze. She stood there for a couple of seconds, then finally turned away and let the gentlemanly man help her onto the yacht.
The engine rumbled to life.
Emmy reached out in despair, her fingers clawing at nothing but cold, empty air.
...
Inside the yacht’s plush cabin, Teresa sank down onto a seat and rubbed her temples, looking a little out of it.
Andrew sat next to her, taking off his jacket and gently draping it over her shoulders. His voice was soft and full of concern.
“What’s wrong? You look terrible.”
Teresa let out a long sigh, her eyes lost and glassy.
“I thought I heard Emmy’s voice again. Just now, on the shore. She was calling me.”
Andrew reached over and pressed his fingers to her temples, massaging away her headache with just the right touch.
“Teresa, you’re exhausted. The doctor said you’ve been stretched too thin lately. Missing her so much… it’s no wonder your mind is playing tricks on you.”
Teresa closed her eyes and gave a bitter, helpless smile.
Hallucinations.
She’d lost count of how many times she’d heard that voice lately. Every time she’d sent someone to check, it was always nothing.
Maybe she really was losing her mind missing her daughter so much.
Andrew watched her tired profile and spoke gently, his voice low and steady.
“Don’t give up. There’s still hope.”
“James has already used Mr. Nelson’s name to spread the news about the national AI charity tour.”
At the mention of that, a bit of light returned to Teresa’s eyes.
“That’s right. Emmy has always been obsessed with AI since she was a kid.”
“If she hears about the exhibition, she’ll come, won’t she?”
Andrew wrapped her cold hand in his, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“She will. I know she will. We’ll wait for her at the next stop. It’s the biggest exhibition venue. She’s bound to show up there.”
Teresa nodded, turning to stare out at the pitch-black ocean through the window.
“Emmy, you have to come. Mom’s waiting for you…”
...
Meanwhile, on another yacht, Emmy was dragged up and tossed onto the deck.
