Her lips quivered as she whispered, barely able to believe what she was seeing. Tears spilled over, her eyes turning red in an instant.
How could this be real?
By now, her mom should have been long gone, lost in that plane crash. Emmy remembered everything so clearly—the funeral, the black-and-white photo, the kind of pain that never really fades.
But there she was, right on the screen. Alive. Smiling at the camera with that gentle look Emmy had missed for so long.
“Mom’s alive… Mom didn’t die!”
Emmy moved closer to the big screen, craning her neck to take in every detail of that familiar face. Maybe being reborn had changed the timeline. Maybe her memories were wrong. None of that mattered. The only thing she knew for sure was that her mom was still out there, the only family she had left in this world.
A line of text scrolled along the bottom of the screen: Blue Stone Island, Seaside Resort Center.
Emmy burned the address into her mind.
“I have to go to Blue Stone Island! I have to go right now!”
…
Blue Stone Island was private property, locked down tight. Emmy didn’t have a passport, an invitation, or even decent clothes to wear. The ferry docked at the pier while tourists in designer outfits lined up, chatting and laughing as they passed through security.
Emmy hid in the shadows of the cargo hold, watching the security checkpoint with her heart racing. There was no way she could get in through the main entrance.
She clenched her jaw, waited until darkness settled in, and then quietly slipped off the back of the boat into the freezing sea.
The water was shockingly cold, salty waves crashing over her again and again. Emmy swam as hard as she could, her lungs burning with every breath. Finally, her hand found the rough surface of a reef.
She dragged herself out of the water, soaked and shivering, looking like a stray that had been caught in a storm. Now the sky was completely dark.
The banquet hall in the distance sparkled with lights, but people were already starting to leave.
No… I’m running out of time…
Emmy didn’t bother trying to wring out her clothes. She just stumbled toward the hall, her hair dripping, shoes squishing with every step.
Security guards in black uniforms stood everywhere, their eyes sharp.
“Who’s there?”
A flashlight beam hit her face. Emmy flinched, raising a hand to shield her eyes.
