“I’m not going to die.”
James’s voice was low and steady. “I’m coming up, too.”
Emmy pressed her lips together. She didn’t argue.
The rock face wasn’t very tall, but the rain had turned it slick and treacherous, each stone slippery as if someone had greased it. Emmy’s hands and feet were numb from the cold. The moment she tried to climb, she slipped.
“Careful.”
A big hand braced the sole of her foot.
Emmy glanced down, startled, her heart skipping a beat.
“Push. You’ve got this.”
James stood below her, his shoulder steady at her back, his hands lifting her up. He hoisted her into a shallow, drier part of the alcove.
He didn’t try to climb up himself until he was sure she was safe. Then, gritting his teeth, he dragged his injured leg up the rock. Every movement looked painful, but he made it.
Emmy curled up in the innermost corner, hugging her knees to her chest, shivering so hard her teeth chattered.
Outside, the daylight was almost gone. The temperature was dropping fast, and the wind cut through the alcove like icy knives.
James looked at her, and the sight of her pale face nearly broke him.
He reached for his backpack, unzipped it, and pulled out a compressed food bar. He tore open the wrapper and handed it to her.
“Eat something. You need your strength.”
Emmy hesitated before taking it, her fingers stiff from the cold. She kept her head down, her voice quiet and distant. “Thank you.”
James’s hand froze in midair, and the light in his eyes faded a little.
He never thought he’d see the woman he loved act this polite with him.
He swallowed hard, then just turned and started to leave.
Emmy’s heart jumped. She called out quickly, “Wait, where are you going? Your leg… you can’t get it wet!”
“I’ll be fine.”
James didn’t look back. Even from behind, his tall figure looked a little defeated. “I’m just getting some firewood. I’ll be right back.”
He stepped out into the wind and rain, sliding down the rock face again.
Emmy clutched the food bar, watching his limping silhouette disappear into the rain. Something heavy settled in her chest.
