The weather on the island was wild and unpredictable. One minute the sky was clear, the next, rain came pouring down in sheets.
The freezing water soaked right through Emmy’s thin clothes. She shivered, teeth chattering. She wanted to run for cover, but her eyes landed on the man lying unconscious at her feet. She hesitated.
His wounds were fresh, barely patched up. If the dirty rain got into them, infection was almost certain. Out here, that could mean death.
Emmy clenched her jaw, pushed herself upright, and knelt beside him. She stretched out her arms as far as she could, bending over until she was hunched above him. Using her own body, she tried to block the wind and rain from hitting him.
Rain slapped against the cuts on her back, stinging so bad it made her catch her breath. The cold seemed to seep right into her bones. Emmy was shaking so hard she could barely hold herself up, but she refused to move.
She lost track of time. All she knew was the icy rain, and the man who needed her protection.
Gradually, the downpour must have revived him. James’s eyelashes fluttered, and he forced his eyes open. His gaze was blurry at first, but right away he saw her. A small, trembling figure, trying her best to shield him.
Something twisted in his chest, sharp and overwhelming. He could barely breathe.
“…Wife.”
His voice was rough and broken, thick with longing and pain. Emmy froze. She didn’t know what to do, didn’t even have time to think.
Suddenly, James’s hand shot up, grabbing the back of her head. He pulled her down, hard, and crushed her to his chest.
“Wife… I missed you so much…”
His arms wrapped around her, almost too tight to bear, as if he was afraid she would disappear if he let go. His face pressed against hers, and she felt something hot and wet sliding down between their cheeks. Rain or tears? She couldn’t tell.
James’s whole body shook. His words were raw, desperate with relief and fear.
“I finally… finally found you… I was too late. I left you alone, scared, for so long. I’m sorry. I didn’t protect you… Losing you was the worst mistake of my life. I missed you so much, it drove me crazy… Wife, please… don’t ever leave me again…”
Emmy was frozen in his arms. Her mind was blank, scattered. By all logic, being this close to a stranger should have freaked her out. She should have pushed him away.
But for some reason, hearing him whisper to her with so much pain and love made her own heart twist with a deep, aching sadness. Her eyes burned, and she felt tears welling up without warning.
Why? Why did his voice make her want to cry?
She lifted her hand to push him away. Her palm rested on his chest, but all her strength vanished. For several long seconds, she just stayed like that, lost.
