Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 908

Emmy felt lost for a second.

Then she noticed a bit of damp heat on her neck.

Wait… was he crying again?

Wasn’t he supposed to be some kind of super soldier? Why did he cry more than she did? Emmy just couldn’t figure him out. Still, her heart gave a strange, sour squeeze.

She paused, then gently pushed at his chest, cheeks burning.

“Can you not do that next time?” she said, trying to sound tough, though she knew it didn’t really work. “I know you’re hurt, but you can’t just use that as an excuse to get all handsy.”

She wriggled out of his arms.

James’s arms fell to his sides, his whole face falling along with them. He looked at her, eyes hurt and a little lost.

Emmy kept her eyes away from his and bent down to pick up a branch that looked sturdy enough.

“Here, I found you a walking stick. Try it,” she said, holding it out.

James glanced down, then took the branch from her. He used it to try to steady himself.

Crack.

The branch, which had looked solid, snapped clean in two under his weight.

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Emmy stared at the broken pieces, mortified. She ruffled her messy short hair and let out an awkward laugh.

“Okay, well…”

“I’ll find you a stronger one in a minute. Anyway, the fire’s about to go out, so I’ll, uh, get it going again.”

Trying to hide her embarrassment, she scurried over to the fire pit.

There were still a few embers glowing, but when she dumped a bunch of thick logs on top, the fire choked and died, leaving only a puff of black smoke.

Emmy froze.

That was just… humiliating.

She heard a rustle behind her. James, dragging his injured leg, slowly made his way over and sat down beside her.

He saw the look on her face as she stared at the smoking fire and couldn’t help but smile, just a little, his lips pale but curved.
