Emmy finally snapped back to reality when her mom spoke. She was a mess. She could actually smell the awful stench on herself. Embarrassed, she let go, stepped back, and wiped the tears from her face.

“It was Dean,” she blurted out. “He didn’t just lie to me. He kept me trapped on that island. I wasn’t allowed to talk to anyone or leave his sight. I ran away. I had nowhere to go and I was scared someone would hurt me, so I made myself look dirty and gross on purpose.”

She ran her fingers through her uneven, chopped hair, and more tears spilled down her cheeks. “Yesterday, I saw his guys at the docks. They had my photo and were looking everywhere. I cut my hair to disguise myself so they wouldn’t recognize me. I pretended to be a shell vendor... that’s how I got away.”

Teresa felt her heart breaking with every word. “Then why didn’t you call us? Why not reach out to your mom?”

Emmy opened her mouth, but the tears just kept coming. She stared at her mom, so alive, so real, like someone she’d lost and somehow found again. She really believed her mother was gone, that she had no one left to call. There was no way she could explain coming back to life or why her memories didn’t make sense.

James stood off to the side, listening, and his own heart ached so much it was hard to breathe. Emmy couldn’t answer, so he stepped in.

“Mom, let’s get Emmy cleaned up and into fresh clothes. The medical team will be here soon to check her over.”

Teresa snapped out of her daze. “Yes, of course, she needs a checkup. Thank goodness we found you. You need to get cleaned up too, you’ve suffered enough.”

She took Emmy’s hand and led her up toward the white villa on the cliff. Emmy had barely walked a few steps before she stopped, turning to her mom in confusion.

“Mom, why does James… call you Mom, too?”

Teresa stopped, stunned. She turned and stared at Emmy. “He’s your husband. What else would he call me?”

Emmy’s eyes went huge. “He’s my… husband?” The words just slipped out, “That can’t be right!”
