Upstairs in the second-floor bedroom, the maid worked quickly, wiping Emmy clean and dressing her in soft silk pajamas. Emmy was still unconscious. The medical team rushed in, wheeling in several machines and hooking up wires and monitors to her body.
An hour later, the lead doctor came out of the bedroom, holding a medical tablet. To give Emmy peace and privacy, everyone moved to the conference room.
“Boss. Teresa.” The doctor’s voice was heavy. “Her condition isn’t good.”
Teresa’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean, not good? Tell me exactly.”
The doctor let out a slow breath. “First, besides the recent scrapes and cuts, she has a few older injuries. Especially on her wrists.”
He brought up a photo—a close-up of Emmy’s pale, delicate wrist. The scars stood out, raw and jarring.
“There are both old and new scars here. The old one is from a long, clean cut, probably made over a month ago. It was dangerous enough to kill. The newer one is shorter and looks like it opened up the old wound again.”
He tapped a pinkish line in the image. “It’s not as deep, but it’s clear she’s had serious suicidal thoughts.”
Teresa dropped into a chair, hand pressed over her chest, tears spilling down her cheeks. “My Emmy…”
James sat rigid, his face dark and stormy. His hands clenched on his knees, knuckles white, veins standing out on the back of his hands. The anger in his eyes was almost physical.
“Go on,” he said, voice tight.
The doctor hesitated, then swiped to the next page.
“We also found a cut on the inside of her left arm. It hasn’t healed all the way, and there’s a bit of infection. The cut is deep and ragged. The edges are messy.”
He glanced at both of them. “From the way it’s healing, and from what was left inside, we think someone had implanted a tiny tracking device there. She probably dug it out herself with a dull knife.”
Just thinking about it sent chills down everyone’s spine. No anesthesia, no surgical tools. Just a fragile girl, so desperate to be free that she’d carve into her own skin.
