Teresa hugged her tight, her voice trembling with anger. “This isn’t your fault. Dean’s the one who did this to you. We’re going to get you better, okay? We’ll take care of you, body and mind, until you’re really healed.”
She let out a heavy sigh. “You know, James is hurt too. He needs time to recover as well. He’ll be staying here on the island with you until both of you are back on your feet.”
“Mom…” Emmy frowned, lifting her head from Teresa’s shoulder, uncertainty clouding her eyes. “Is James… really my husband?”
If anyone else had said it, she never would have believed them. But coming from her mom, it was hard to question. Her mom never lied to her. Still, it just didn’t make sense. How could she suddenly be married to someone like James? And what about Dean? Did they never get married after all? Nothing added up.
Teresa watched Emmy’s face, her own heart racing. She was terrified Emmy might start digging for lost memories. When she saw Emmy’s brow knit, she jumped in, her tone turning serious. “Emmy, you have to listen to me. Dean… he’s a monster. He kidnapped you. He didn’t just lock you up. He gave you drugs—stuff that blocks your memories.”
Emmy’s eyes widened, shock and fear flashing across her face.
Teresa pressed on, needing Emmy to understand. “This kind of drug has really nasty side effects. You must not try to force yourself to remember the things you’ve forgotten. I’m serious. If you push it, it could hurt your brain. You could end up… not yourself anymore.”
She took Emmy’s hands in hers. “All I can tell you right now is the truth. James is your husband. You two are legally married. The rest—all the details and memories—will come back when you’re healthy and the drugs are out of your system. For now, just hold on to this one fact. Promise me you won’t try to think about the past anymore, okay? Do it for yourself, and for everyone waiting for you to come home.”
Emmy went still. Somewhere in her mind, something seemed to flicker by, too quick to catch.
“Ah…” She barely had time to form the thought before a sharp pain stabbed through her head. Emmy clutched at her temples and let out a quiet moan.
Inside the room, Teresa hugged her even tighter.
“Of course, sweetheart. I promise, no matter what happens, I’ll be there with you on your birthday.”
She wanted to tell Emmy to rest more, maybe eat something, but Emmy just clung to her, refusing to let go. Teresa’s heart ached, but she let her hold on as long as she needed.
Still, some things couldn’t wait any longer. As a mother, she had to know.
“Emmy, can you tell me how you got through these last ten months? Other than locking you up, did that bastard do anything else to you? Did he ever hurt you? Or… was there anything worse?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
