The doctor spoke gently, trying to calm her down. “Please, don’t worry. Right now, she’s showing no signs of anything serious. The effects of this medication don’t last forever. Once her body finishes processing it, the medicine will leave her system and her memories will come back on their own.”
He paused, his voice growing more serious. “But you have to be careful. Don’t try to force her to remember. Those memories are locked away for a reason. If you push too hard, it’s like letting a wild animal out of its cage. The shock could hurt her nerves. Maybe a little bit won’t do much harm, but if it happens too often, the damage could be permanent.”
Teresa’s face turned pale, and she nodded over and over. “As long as she’s safe, it’s fine if she never remembers.”
The doctor gave her a few more instructions, then left the room. Silence settled over everything.
James sat slumped in his chair, eyes fixed on the floor, his face unreadable except for the angry red glint in his eyes. Time passed with neither of them moving. After a while, Teresa snapped out of her daze.
“I’m going to check on Emmy.” She wiped away her tears and hurried out, her steps a little wobbly.
James stayed where he was, his whole body radiating tension and anger. Even his assistant kept his distance, standing quietly by the door, too afraid to approach. It wasn’t until James’s leg hurt so much it felt numb that he finally pushed himself to stand, gripping the armrest for support.
As he walked past the door, his assistant called, “Boss!”
James didn’t even look at him. “Bring me some clean clothes. And a wheelchair.”
“Yes, sir!”
When he reached Emmy’s bedroom, James paused for a second, then went into the guest room next door. He sat on the edge of the bathtub and tore open his pant leg, wrapping his wounds tightly with waterproof tape, going over them again and again. Only then did he step into the bathroom, stripping off the rest of his clothes.
The water poured over him, sliding down his strong frame and across the scars—old and new—lining his skin. He closed his eyes, letting the water cool the frustration burning inside him.
He couldn’t forgive himself for what had happened. As her husband, he should have protected her. He’d let her get hurt, let her suffer…
James’s eyes filled with tears. He slammed his fist into the slick tiles.
But it didn’t matter. Even if she didn’t remember him now. As long as she was alive, as long as she was safe, that was enough. If he had to start over, he would. He’d chase her all over again. He’d stay by her side, help her recover, get her through the depression, no matter how long it took. This time, he’d risk everything. He would never let her get hurt again. Never.
