This didn’t look like a bedroom at all. It felt more like the nerve center of some secret operation.
The big, comfy bed was basically a desk now, covered with a little folding table and piles of paperwork everywhere. The coffee table and actual desk were swamped with gadgets. Five laptops sat in a neat arc, their screens flashing with colorful stock charts, real-time data, and satellite maps. Even the nightstand was stacked with folders, teetering and ready to topple any second.
The whole room smelled like bitter coffee.
Emmy just stood there, completely stunned, her mouth hanging open. “All of this? Seriously?”
So this was his idea of catching up on a little work?
James rolled himself back to the desk, his voice totally casual. “Looks like a lot, but I’ve almost finished with most of it.”
Emmy glanced at the five laptops, then pointed at one of the screens. “Are you doing data analysis? Or maybe coding? I could help with that, you know. I’m pretty good.”
But James just grabbed his phone from the table and handed it to her. “Not that. I just need you to take a picture.”
Emmy blinked, not sure she’d heard him right. “Just… take a photo? That’s it?”
How was this even helping?
James stared down at the phone, his eyes unreadable. “It’s not that simple.”
“I need you to make it look like it was taken secretly. Like a candid shot. I want it to look like I’m really helpless in this wheelchair.”
Emmy frowned, turning the phone over in her hands. “Why?”
James leaned back, his voice quiet. “Someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure I ended up like this. Right now, this is exactly how they want to see me.”
Emmy’s heart skipped a beat. She suddenly remembered that conversation between Dean and his foster father. They’d said Tyler wanted to ruin James for good.
Emmy’s eyes went wide. So it really was brothers turning on each other? Or maybe it was just Tyler who wanted James out of the way.
She couldn’t help herself. “Are you two… not close?”
A flicker of something—maybe bitterness—crossed James’s face, but his voice stayed calm. “We used to be. Not anymore.”
He shook his head and didn’t say anything else.
But Emmy got it. Classic rich family drama. Brothers fighting over power. She suddenly remembered something—when James first introduced himself, he’d mentioned that Jamie, his brother, died ten years ago. And she’d overheard Dean’s foster father talking about how Tyler had ignored Jamie’s death, and…
Emmy folded her arms, tapping her chin as she paced the room. Her brain felt rusty, like it hadn’t worked this hard in ages. She needed a second to fit all the pieces together.
James watched her pacing, one eyebrow raised. “What’s on your mind?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
