Emmy stood there, totally stunned. This kind of luck was unreal.

James looked out at the rocky hills in the distance and kept going. “This island’s been mined for thirty years already. According to the latest geological report, if we keep up at this pace, there’s enough gold underground for another fifty years.”

Fifty years. Emmy did the math in her head. With the thirty years it had already been running, that meant eighty years of gold mining. She didn’t know much about the business, but even she understood just how rare that was. An island that could produce gold for eighty years had to be one of a kind in the world.

She couldn’t help herself. “So this island belonged to your grandma? She must’ve been amazing.”

James’s eyes dimmed for a moment. He looked down. “My grandmother passed away.” He paused, then added, “Before she died, she gave the island to someone very important.”

Emmy immediately felt bad for bringing it up. She dropped her voice. “Sorry, I didn’t know…”

“It’s okay.” James pulled himself together quickly, a small, calm smile back on his lips. He glanced at the outline of the mountain. “Want to see how it all works?”

Emmy’s eyes lit up, but she hesitated. “Can I even see that? Isn’t it kind of top secret? What if I accidentally spill something…”

James grinned. “Of course you can see it.”

She realized he was right. She was now the Nelson family’s young madam. The island used to belong to Mrs. Nelson, and even if it had been given away, it probably stayed within the family.

“Then let’s go!” Emmy perked up, her interest piqued.

They climbed back onto their horses and rode down the beach a while longer. Before long, they came to a rough stone road that cut deep into the rocky hills, the ground covered in loose gravel.

James stopped and hopped off. “The horses can’t go any further.” He reached up and helped Emmy down.

They tied their horses in a patch of grass among the rocks, letting them nibble away. Then they headed in on foot, weaving through the strange, jagged stone formations.

The deeper they went, the heavier the security became. Guards stood watch everywhere, some at little checkpoints, all of them armed and alert. But as soon as they spotted James, every guard snapped to attention, saluted, and lowered their weapons.

The scale of it all was overwhelming.

Emmy took another step forward, needing to see more.

“Who’s there?” A supervisor on patrol spun around, eyes locking on her. He looked shocked and furious. This was the heart of the mining operation, a place nobody unauthorized was allowed.

“How did you get in here?” he shouted, pointing right at her, voice shaking with anger and fear.

“Somebody! There’s an intruder in the mine!”

“Catch her! Don’t let her get away!”

A few big guys dropped what they were doing and rushed straight toward Emmy.
