James’s voice was low and steady. “I’ll fly back and take care of this right away.”
“No need,” Emmy cut in. She explained, “I already compared the data. Smart Health genuinely meets the needs of people with disabilities better than ours does. Survival of the fittest, right? That’s just how things work, especially in tech. Every new advancement means some products get left behind. Every researcher has to face that. If we try to use our resources to shut out a product just because it’s better than ours, that’s the real tragedy for science. I think what we should do isn’t blocking something superior from coming out, but focusing on improving what we’ve built. Let our technology do the talking.”
James paused, taking it all in. Then a slow smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. It was a smile full of pride and admiration.
“Alright,” he said, his voice warm and deep, almost like music. “Then I hope you learn a lot.”
The sound of his voice sent a little shiver through her. Emmy felt lighter, her earlier awkwardness about yesterday morning washing away. With James supporting her so openly, she finally relaxed and started talking.
“Honestly, coming here for the award has really opened my eyes. Research is such a huge field, and that’s just in medicine. At the conference, I heard all these crazy ideas. Some people are working on advanced brain-computer interfaces, some even want to upload human consciousness to the cloud. It’s wild. I can barely imagine what the whole global research scene looks like, it must be endless.”
She went on, chatting about the award, the ideas she’d heard, her dreams for the future. James just listened quietly, leaning against the window, her lively voice filling his ears. Sometimes he’d reply with a soft “Yeah,” or “Sounds interesting,” or just a thoughtful “Mhm.”
After a while, Emmy realized she’d been talking nonstop. She stopped, a little embarrassed. “Sorry, am I rambling?”
“Not at all,” James said with a low chuckle. “I love hearing you talk.”
Emmy’s cheeks warmed. She decided to change the subject. “So, when are you heading back home?”
[I’d love to join the team as a technical consultant. But I have to admit, I’m a little greedy. I’d also like to learn from Dr. Hopkins.]
She barely had time to set her phone down before it buzzed with a reply.
[This is amazing news! I promise Dr. Hopkins is going to be thrilled to meet you. Breakfast tomorrow morning at the restaurant upstairs, my treat?]
Emmy sent back a quick “OK.”

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
