The online drama was only getting worse. Everywhere Emmy looked, there were angry posts and nasty comments about Sync. Danny, usually the calm and steady one, looked on edge. He paced across the suite’s living room, glued to his phone as he tried to put out fires.
Emmy stepped out and called to him. “What’s going on? Still worked up about what people are saying online?”
Danny shoved his phone into his pocket, his brow tense. “Emmy, there’s no way this is just a coincidence. You just won that award, and suddenly Nelson Corporation drops a new prosthetic that beats us in every category? The timing is just too shady. Honestly, I think they stole your design.”
Emmy’s eyes went cold. “Don’t say things like that unless you have proof.”
Danny fell quiet, clearly frustrated, but he didn’t argue back.
She walked over to the big window, her gaze drifting out over the unfamiliar city lights. Her voice was steady. “I started working on this prosthesis so people who lost limbs could live more normal lives. If someone else manages to make something better and cheaper, and that means more people who couldn’t afford Sync can walk again, isn’t that a good thing?”
Danny tried to protest. “But Emmy—”
She turned and cut him off. “We lost, Danny. That’s all there is to it. They did better than us. There’s no excuse, and no point trying to make one. If we want to be a great company, we also have to learn how to lose gracefully.”
Emmy crossed to the desk and gave her instructions. “Let Starlight Corporation know to pause all sales of Sync. If anyone who already bought one isn’t happy, give them a full refund. Sync’s tech just isn’t good enough anymore. Forcing it onto the market will only hurt our reputation. But keep the production line ready for me.”
Danny looked stunned. “Keep it ready? For what?”
She grabbed her phone and opened her contacts, thinking about reaching out to someone. But every name in her list felt like a stranger. Sylvia, Will, Steve, Lorelei, Cadence… She didn’t really remember any of them. Each one seemed to belong to a story she’d forgotten.
Her curiosity only grew. What had happened during that lost year? What had happened between her and James?
Emmy forced herself to stop thinking about it. She put her phone down, closed her eyes, and started counting sheep. Eventually, she slipped into a restless sleep, her dreams a jumble of strange and blurry memories she couldn’t quite put together.
She woke up in the middle of the night with a pounding headache. She’d only been asleep for a few hours. Since sleep wasn’t coming back, she decided to give up and do something useful. Pulling up the neuroscience files John had sent her, she started to read.

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
