Morning light filtered in. After washing up, Emmy put on some light makeup and slipped into a sharp, stylish suit. She headed upstairs to the restaurant.
John was already there, nursing a cup of coffee by the window. He spotted her right away and waved with a big grin. “Hey, Lin! Over here!”
They ended up talking for ages, the kind of conversation that just kept rolling. Neuroscience, AI ethics, even the latest breakthroughs in bionic materials—nothing was off-limits. The more they chatted, the more it felt like they’d known each other forever, making Emmy wonder why they hadn’t met sooner.
Eventually, they nailed down a time for Emmy to visit John’s lab. She held her coffee cup, pretending to be casual as she asked, “By the way, John, are there any holidays coming up at school?”
John blinked, then shrugged. “Sure, we get weekends off, though honestly, people in research never really get weekends.”
“That’s not what I mean. I’m talking about a longer break.”
Emmy set her cup down and traced the rim with her finger, her eyes full of hope. “You know, just flying to The States eats up a whole day. My mom and my husband are both back home. I was hoping to sneak back during a long weekend.”
This chance to study abroad was once in a lifetime, and she didn’t want to miss it. Still, she really wanted to go home, even if just for a little while. There was something weighing on her, something she needed to figure out, and James had mentioned someone important. She still didn’t know who that was.
John checked his phone, then smiled. “Looks like you’re in luck, Lin. Labor Day’s next month, and it’s on a Friday. That means with the weekend, you’ll get three days off.”
Emmy’s eyes lit up. She did the math in her head. If she left Thursday night, she’d land at home Friday, then fly back Sunday night. That gave her two whole days at home.
Two days. It would be tight, but if she planned carefully, it should work.
Back at her hotel room, Emmy started packing. There wasn’t much to do, since she’d be taking almost everything with her to Boston anyway. She took out her passport and documents, laying them on the desk. In the corner sat an old tear-off calendar. Emmy picked up a pen and, feeling pretty cheerful, circled September first in bright red.
Labor Day. Just thinking about going home made her heart skip.
Emmy’s grip on her phone tightened, her cheeks burning. She cleared her throat, rolled onto her stomach, and kicked her bare legs back and forth. “You miss me? Want to video chat?”
She started to move the phone away from her ear to switch to video, but James cut her off.
“No.” His answer was quick, almost automatic. “I can’t right now. I’m… busy.”
Emmy stopped, pouting a little. He said he missed her but wouldn’t even video chat? Liar.
Before she could say anything, James spoke again.
“When will your program finish? Any chance you’ll be home by the end of the year?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
