Chapter 113

The birthmark on Nerissa’s arm was a deep, vibrant red, its shape so beautiful it almost looked like a plum blossom.

Her skin was pale as snow.

The contrast made the birthmark stand out like a crimson plum blossom blooming against a snowy backdrop-so vivid it seemed almost alive.

When everyone finally got a clear look at the birthmark on Nerissa’s arm, the whole living room seemed to freeze in place.

The people who had been so disappointed just moments before suddenly seemed to come back to life, their faces bursting with excitement.

It was a perfect match.

Every single detail lined up perfectly.

Those cute dimples Arie had? Nerissa had them too.

That birthmark Arie had? Nerissa had it as well.

Looks like…

Chances were, Nerissa really was Arie.

Mrs. Berenson’s pupils contracted sharply-the red birthmark before her eyes overlapped perfectly with the one she’d seen on her granddaughter’s arm.

‘Yes!

‘I remember now,’ she told herself.

Arie’s birthmark was on her right arm.

Not her left.

Verena managed to keep her shock in check and walked over to Mrs. Berenson, gently taking her arm and giving her a reassuring gesture, signaling her to stay calm.

Verena turned to Nerissa with a smile. “Dr. Jamison, that tattoo on your arm is really beautiful!”

Nerissa was busy wiping the water off her arm and didn’t notice anything strange going on. She just replied casually, “It’s just a birthmark, not a tattoo. Had it since I was little.”

‘It’s not a tattoo.

Verena caught Nerissa’s reply.

‘She said it’s not a tattoo!’

But Verena wasn’t the only one who caught that.

The rest of the Berenson family heard it loud and clear too.

Everyone was on the edge of their seats, barely able to contain their excitement.

Mrs. Berenson tried to speak, but emotion choked her words.

Chapter 113

Her throat tightened, making it impossible to speak.

Nineteen years!

Nineteen years!

She had waited for this moment for nineteen long years.

Verena managed to keep her shock in check and continued, “Dr. Jamison, you’re so young and already so accomplished. Your parents must be really proud of you, right?”

When Nerissa heard the word “parents,” she paused for a moment, then replied, “Madam Verena, I don’t have any parents.”

Her tone was light, almost indifferent.

But everyone in the room felt a pang in their chest for her.

Victor blurted out, “So… where did your parents go?”

Everyone else in the living room turned their eyes to Nerissa.

They were all waiting for her answer.

“I’m an orphan. I grew up with my grandpa,” Nerissa replied, still sounding totally chill. She even picked up her glass and took a sip of water. “The old folks in the village said Grandpa found me in a ravine, covered head to toe in blood. Everyone thought I was done for, but I guess I’m just too stubborn to die.”

Covered in blood.

Found in a ravine.

Mrs. Berenson felt like she couldn’t breathe.

She felt so overwhelmed, it hurt.

Frederick’s voice grew thick with emotion as he asked, “Dr. Jamison, sorry if this is too personal, but how old were you when your grandpa found you?”

“About three or four months, I think,” Nerissa replied.

Three or four months!

Three or four months!

Mrs. Berenson couldn’t hold back her emotions any longer. Arie had gone missing when she was just three months old.

‘Nerissa is my Arie!’

Mrs. Berenson threw her arms around Nerissa, sobbing uncontrollably. “Arie! You really are my Arie! You’re finally home! These years have been torture for me, sweetheart.

“Arie! My Arie! I’m so sorry, baby. Grandma has been searching for you all these years, but I just couldn’t find you!”

Everyone else couldn’t help but wipe away their tears too.

Nerissa couldn’t really describe how she felt inside.

This was the second time Mrs. Berenson had called her Aric.

Chapter 113

No question about it.

Arie was the lucky one.

Even after all those years lost, she still had people who cared about her and never forgot her.

Unlike Nerissa herself.

Thinking about everything she’d been through, Nerissa felt a wave of bitterness in her heart. She hugged Mrs. Berenson, gently patting her back, and said softly, “Mrs. Berenson, you’ve got the wrong person. I’m not Arie.”

“Yes, you are!” Mrs. Berenson held Nerissa tight, refusing to let go. “You’re my Arie!”

She was scared that if she let go, Arie would vanish again, just like she did nineteen years ago.

She never wanted to go through that kind of pain ever again.

“Arie, do you know how much Grandma has missed you all these years?” Mrs. Berenson choked out, her voice thick with

emotion.

Jessica and Marianne walked over to Mrs. Berenson, gently supporting her arms as they helped her settle onto the couch. They tried to soothe her. “Mom, take it easy, okay? You don’t want to scare Dr. Jamison. Let’s all sit down and talk to her slowly.”

“That’s right, Mom,” Chloe chimed in. “Let’s sit down and take it slow.”

“Dr. Jamison, come sit with us,” Chloe added.

Mrs. Berenson finally calmed down and settled in right beside Nerissa on the couch.

Orice everyone was settled, Verena finally spoke up. “Dr. Jamison, to be honest, your looks, your story, everything about you reminds us so much of our Arie.”

“Arie was only three months old when she got into a car accident with my sister and brother-in-law on their way to visit our ancestors’ graves. The crash was horrific-the driver died instantly, my brother-in-law has been in a coma ever since, and my sister and Arie just disappeared without a trace. People said the mountains, were full of wild beasts, and that’s what happened to them.

“But we never believed it. We couldn’t accept that my sister and Arie were just gone. A master once told us Arie was destined to rise like a phoenix, so all these years, we’ve been searching with the Sullivan family for them.

“When Arie smiled, she had two cute dimples on her cheeks, and she also had a red birthmark on her arm, just like the one you have.

“That’s why my mom is sure you’re Arie.”

Verena paused, then continued, “So, Dr. Jamison, would you be willing to do a DNA test with us?”

At those words, everyone looked at Nerissa, their faces full of anticipation.

“Sure,” Nerissa replied with a calm nod. “But you know, life throws a lot of coincidences our way. Even if my story sounds a lot like Arie’s, I can’t guarantee I’m really her. Mrs. Berenson, Madam Verena, I just want you both to be ready-just in case the results aren’t what you expect.”

Mrs. Berenson squeezed Nerissa’s hand tight, her gaze full of absolute conviction. “You are my Arie! I just know it! This time. I won’t be wrong!”

A whole nineteen years.

Chapter 113

Mrs. Berenson had taken DNA tests at least five hundred times.

But not once did she get the answer she longed for.

Her lips curved into a smile, but it never reached her eyes. “Mrs. Berenson, to be honest, I wish I really were Arie too. But maybe I’m just not as lucky as she is-she’s got so many people who love her and are waiting for her to come home.”

She’d already had her hopes crushed once before.

So…

She just couldn’t bring herself to hope again.

Aileen looked at Nerissa, her voice gentle. “Dr. Jamison, please don’t think that way. You’re incredible, and even if you’re not our Arie, I bet your real family is out there searching for you, hoping to find someone as wonderful as you.”

The others all nodded, their faces full of encouragement and support.

The Berenson family had spent years searching for Charlotte and Arie, and they even owned their own genetic testing company just for this purpose. Victor didn’t waste a second-he quickly made the call to have someone come over and collect the samples right at their place.

Two hours later, a team of lab technicians in white coats arrived to collect the samples.

Blood samples were taken.

The staff pricked Nerissa’s and Mrs. Berenson’s index fingers to draw blood for the test.

Once the samples were collected without a hitch, Victor turned to the technician. “Lee, when can we expect the results?”

Lee replied respectfully, “Sir, if we go with the standard process, it’ll take about seven days. But if you want it expedited, we can have it ready in three days.”

“Same as always-expedited,” Victor said.

“Got it, Sir,” Lee replied.

Mrs. Berenson was getting restless. “Isn’t there any way to make it faster? If you could get the results in just a few hours, that’d be perfect!”

Lee gave Mrs. Berenson a sympathetic look. “Mrs. Berenson, I understand how anxious you are. But paternity testing is a really serious legal process. Once we have the results, we have to review and re-review everything. Even the tiniest mistake means we’re legally responsible.”
