Chapter 117
“Good news?
“What good news are you talking about?” Mrs. Sullivan asked.
When she heard Eliana say that, she was taken aback for a moment.
Before Mrs. Sullivan could even process what was happening, Eliana’s voice came through on the other end of the line. “Mrs. Sullivan, we’ve found Arie! She’s in Aosthorne right now. My mom and the rest of us have already decided to head over there and bring her back home.”
“What? Eliana! What did you just say?” Mrs. Sullivan’s aches and pains disappeared in an instant, and she felt a rush of energy. She sprang up from the bed. “Eliana, tell me again!”
Even though Mrs. Sullivan’s phone wasn’t on speaker and Luna couldn’t hear a word of what was being said, she just knew this call from the Berenson family had to be about how awesome Anna was.
If Mrs. Berenson wasn’t calling to brag about Anna, there was no way Mrs. Sullivan would be this hyped.
Maybe…
Maybe Mrs. Berenson had even mentioned Anna and Dawn to Mrs. Sullivan.
The more Luna thought about it, the more excited she got. She wanted to say something, but she couldn’t just butt in on their conversation.
Eliana continued, “Yes, Mrs. Sullivan, you heard me right. We’ve found Arie. She looks just like her mom and her brother, and she’s amazing. I’ve already sent you the DNA test results on WhatsApp. Just check your phone and you’ll see for yourself.”
Eliana had actually sent the message five minutes ago, but Mrs. Sullivan had just been lying in bed, too lazy to even look at her messages.
So she had no idea Eliana had messaged her.
At that moment, her mind went completely blank.
‘I’m not imagining this, Mrs. Sullivan told herself.
‘I’m really not imagining this!’ she repeated to herself, almost in disbelief.
‘We found Arie!’ she thought, her heart pounding with excitement.
After all these years, she finally felt hope again.
Mrs. Sullivan was laughing and crying at the same time-her emotions were all over the place.
Even after Eliana hung up, she was still caught up in her own whirlwind of feelings.
Seeing her mom like this, Luna was even more convinced that Mrs. Sullivan must have been absolutely gushing about Anna.
Anna really was that awesome-she totally deserved every bit of praise Mrs. Sullivan could throw her way.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Luna asked, pretending she had no clue what was going on, even though she already knew the answer. “What did the Berenson family say to you?”
Mrs. Sullivan was completely tuned out from the world, her hands trembling as she tapped open WhatsApp.
Sure enough.
Eliana had blown up her WhatsApp with a bunch of messages.
First up was the DNA report.
Next was Nerissa’s home address.
At that moment, Mrs. Sullivan couldn’t hold it in anymore.
She burst into tears, crying out, “Arie! My precious Arie! After all these years, I finally has hope again!”
Luna’s heart skipped a beat.
A bad feeling crept over her.
No way…
“Could it be… Is there news about Ariel?’
But… Ariel is supposed to be dead, isn’t she?
‘How could there possibly be news about someone who’s supposed to be dead?
‘Mrs. Sullivan must just be connecting the dots because of Anna.
‘Yeah, that has to be it.
‘Definitely, that’s the only explanation.
‘No wonder I always feel like Mom plays favorites,’ Luna thought to herself.
Looking at it now, Luna couldn’t help but think her mom was seriously biased.
Anna was supposed to be the center of attention right now.
She was the one who’d totally won over Mrs. Berenson.
Honestly, if anyone deserved to be on her mind at a moment like this, it should’ve been Anna.
‘Why is Mom suddenly thinking about Ariel? What’s up with that?’ Luna wondered, confused.
Anna was right about one thing.
No matter how incredible Anna was, in Mrs. Sullivan’s eyes, she’d never be able to outshine Ariel.
Luna frowned, a wave of bitterness washing over her. But she had to keep it to herself for now. She stepped up to the bed and asked, “Mom, what exactly did the Berenson family say to you? Just take a breath and tell me slowly, okay?”
Mrs. Sullivan grabbed Luna’s hand. “Luna! Where’s the soup? I want some soup!”
She hadn’t been hungry at all a moment ago.
But now, she was starving!
Like, she was absolutely ravenous.
It was like she’d just come back to life in an instant.
Luna was caught off guard again.
‘Soup? Seriously?’ Luna thought, thrown for a loop. ‘Why is Mom suddenly asking for soup right now?’
Shouldn’t we be talking about what the Berensons said first?
Should we set up Dawn and Anna’s engagement first, or what’s the plan…
‘Soup? Out of nowhere?’ Luna thought, totally thrown off.
“Hold on… could it be…?’ Luna’s mind spun.
Is soup actually more important to Mom than Anna right now?’
Luna just had to hold back all her questions, picked up the bowl from the table, and handed it to her mom.
Mrs. Sullivan grabbed the bowl and gulped down the soup in one go, then tossed aside the covers and got out of bed.
Luna was completely caught off guard by her mom’s sudden energy.
Just a few days ago, Mrs. Sullivan didn’t even have the strength to speak up, let alone get out of bed. But now, she was full of energy.
“Mom, where are you going?” Luna asked, still trying to process what was happening.
“Buy a plane ticket! I’m heading out right now!” Mrs. Sullivan blurted out.
‘Buy a plane ticket?’
Hearing that, Luna immediately snapped to attention.
No doubt about it-Mrs. Sullivan was gearing up to fly straight to Minttown.
Anna and Dawn’s engagement was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Of course she had to go to Minttown herself and make sure everything went off without a hitch.
Luna was so hyped she could barely sit still. “Okay, Mom! I’ll book the tickets right now!”
Mrs. Sullivan was already rifling through her closet for something cute to wear. Hearing Luna, she called out, “Luna, book me the next flight out to Aosthorne!”
She was done waiting.
She needed to see Arie, no matter what.
Nineteen whole years.
This reunion between Mrs. Sullivan and Arie was nineteen years in the making.
For all these years, Mrs. Sullivan had no idea what her little Arie had gone through.
Mrs. Sullivan was so desperate, she was ready to hop on the next flight to Aosthorne right now.
She couldn’t wait another second.
Wait, Aosthorne?’
Luna blinked in surprise when she heard her mom say that.
‘Am I hearing things?
The Berensons are in Minttown, so why would Mom want to go to Aosthorne?
‘Is she so hyped she’s just spouting random stuff now?’ Luna thought, a little exasperated.
“Okay, Mom! I’ll get us the next flight to Minttown!” Luna said, already reaching for her phone.
“Not Minttown!” Mrs. Sullivan cut her off, sounding impatient. “Aosthorne! Book the flight to Aosthorne!”
‘Wait, for real? Aosthorne?’
Luna couldn’t wrap her head around it and blurted out, “Why are you going to Aosthorne?”
Mrs. Sullivan grinned, her eyes shining. “I’m heading to Aosthorne to bring Arie home!”
‘Bring… bring who home?
‘Arie?
‘Ariel Sullivan?’ Luna couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Luna felt like she was about to lose it, but she forced herself to stay calm. She turned to her mom and said, “Mom, are you sure this isn’t some kind of scam? We don’t even have any news about Arie. How could you possibly bring her home from Aosthorne when we don’t even know where she is?”
Mrs. Sullivan had already pulled out a bright red puffy coat-she hadn’t worn anything this festive in years.
But today was different.
They’d finally found Arie!
This was the best news she’d had in ages!
Big celebrations call for red, after all.
Now that Arie had finally been found, Mrs. Sullivan felt like everything else would fall into place-her daughter-in-law would be next, her son would wake up, and life would finally start looking up.
Nineteen years.
Mrs. Sullivan had never felt this kind of joy before—not in all her years.
Mrs. Sullivan threw on the red puffer jacket, her smile practically splitting her face. “That call was from Eliana -she said they’ve found Arie, and she’s in Aosthorne right now! I need to catch the next flight out!”
