Chapter 12 Overestimating Herself
Hunter had an only son named Dylan Jamison, who was forty years old. Years ago, Dylan married into the Aosthome family and currently lived with his wife’s relatives.
When Hunter found Nerissa, he originally planned for Dylan and his wife to raise her.
But Dylan and his wife refused; they insisted on having their own biological child, worried that raising a foster daughter would lead to ingratitude.
Still, Hunter couldn’t bear to send Nerissa to an orphanage, so he raised her himself all these years.
“Alright.” Nerissa nodded.
In her memory, she didn’t have much contact with Dylan and his wife.
She had lived with her grandfather in the slums until she was fifteen. Dylan and his wife visited rarely, maybe once every few years. After moving to Aosthorne with her grandfather, she only saw them once or twice.
After dinner, Nerissa kept assembling her laptop and worked until nine o’clock at night before finally checking her phone. Opening WhatsApp, she saw ten strangers had added her as contacts. That reminded her of her task.
Nerissa accepted their friend requests one by one, then created a group chat and added them all in. She started with an introduction [Hello everyone, I’m Nerissa. Looking forward to working with you.]
[Ms. Jamison, hi, I’m Amy. If you need anything, just message me on WhatsApp,] came the first reply.
[Ms. Jamison, hi, I’m Lucy.]
[Ms. Jamison, hi, I’m Mayger.]
One after another, they introduced themselves.
After greetings, Nerissa assigned tasks in the group: [Please have everything done and sent to me by 4 p.m. tomorrow. Thanks, everyone.]
Meanwhile, on the third floor of Kinsbeat Game, Amy spun her chair to sit next to her colleague.
She said, “Lucy, who do you think this Ms. Jamison really is? Do you think she can really pull our company back from the brink of bankruptcy?”
Lucy sipped her iced Americano, squinting. “That’s hard to say.”
Claire, overhearing the conversation, leaned in and whispered, “Have you heard? Mr. Hathersage and Mr. Locke have already terminated their contracts with us.
“Not only did they leave, but the president of the AAA project, Mr. Swynford, was poached by Calloway Group. Our company is totally doomed.”
Amy and Lucy’s eyes widened. “What? Mr. Swynford quit?”
Wade Swynford was extremely talented; he was basically the backbone of the AAA project. His departure was a
devastating blow to Kinsbeat Game and Clive.
“Shh.” Claire put a finger to her lips. “Keep your voices down.”
Lucy swallowed. “Are you sure Mr. Swynford really left?”
Claire nodded firmly. “Absolutely.”
Lucy sighed, “We still had some hope while he was here, but now it’s gone. Competition is fierce. If I lose this job, where am I going to find workmates like you guys?”
Amy looked at Claire suspiciously. “This is so sudden. Yesterday, when I went to the fifth floor, Mr. Swynford was still working. Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”
Claire glanced around. “My best friend is Mr. Swynford’s assistant. She told me. Even she thought it was sudden.
“One moment he was working, the next morning he called in and said he wouldn’t come. Mr. Beaumont should’ve signed a huge compensation deal when he recruited Swynford. Now, Swynford just up and left.”
Amy frowned. “That’s so disloyal of him, just leaving like that. What’s Mr. Beaumont going to do?”
“This isn’t all on Mr. Swynford. He worked for Mr. Beaumont. Now the company’s sinking, he can’t keep hanging on one branch,” Lucy sighed.
Successfully unlocked!
“Hopefully, Ms. Jamison won’t let Mr. Beaumor, ditt and wreat Game’s glory,” Lucy added.
Claire scoffed, “Forget it. I’d advise you not to pin your hopes on Ms. Jamison.”

“Why not?” Lucy asked.
Amy looked curious, too.
Claire continued, “Yesterday, when I went to see Mr. Beaumont, I happened to see Ms. Jamison. Guess what? She looks really young, like a high schooler.
“She’s pretty but more like a trophy, someone who belongs in the entertainment industry. Mr. Beaumont is just desperate.”
‘A pretty face who knows nothing about games? This is a joke,’ Claire thought.
Amy and Lucy instantly lost confidence in Nerissa. ‘Looks like Kinsbeat Game is doomed this time, they thought.
On the seventh floor, Clive stood by the window, talking on the phone.
The person on the other end picked up quickly.
“Hello,” Clive cut straight to the point. “Ms. Jamison, are you busy right now? I have something very important to discuss.”
“Go ahead,” Nerissa replied curtly.
Clive continued, “Our plan might get delayed. Wade from the AAA project department was poached by Calloway Group. I can’t find anyone to replace him right now.”
At the end, Clive couldn’t help but curse, “That bastard Wade, what a jerk. Back when he was overseas, he was just a nobody in the gaming world.
“If it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t be where he is now. Ungrateful to the core, and he stabs me in the back at a time like this.”
Everyone knew Wade had been recruited from overseas by Clive.
What they didn’t know was that Wade had been an unknown nobody abroad.
During the early startup days, Wade and Clive had explored and developed everything together, which laid the foundation for Wade’s success.
Because of their shared history, Clive trusted Wade deeply. They were like brothers, so Clive never made Wade sign any contract, which gave Wade the chance to betray him.
The more Clive thought about it, the angrier he got. He wished he could confront Wade right now and give that heartless backstabber a good beating.
Compared to Clive’s fury, Nerissa remained calm. She said slowly, “Mr. Beaumont, this isn’t the time for reckoning.
“Send me Wade’s work. I’ll handle it. You focus on what you need to do next. Don’t let unrelated matters distract you.”
Clive hesitated, “Ms. Jamison, Wade’s work is pretty complicated, and I’m afraid-”
Before he could finish, Nerissa interrupted, “Afraid of what? I’m here. Just send it to me. You focus on your part and don’t let distractions get in your way.”
With that, Nerissa cut off the call without giving Clive a chance to respond.
Clive had doubts about Nerissa’s ability to handle Wade’s tasks, but after hearing her firm words, his confidence surged instantly. He headed down to the AAA project department without hesitation.
At Jamison Manor, Nerissa installed the last component and pressed the power button.
In just a second, the laptop powered on.
She sat cross-legged on the floor and yawned. “Looks like another sleepless night.”

After leaving City Hall, Owen returned home.
Seeing him so early, Evelyn hurried over. “Owen, did Nerissa even go? I knew she wouldn’t agree to the divorce.”
“She went,” Owen pulled a booklet from his bag. “Here’s the divorce certificate.”
Evelyn took the certificate, disbelief all over her face. “That can’t be a fake, right?”
‘There’s no way Nerissa actually divorced Owen. Pigs might fly first,’ Evelyn thought.
“It’s not fake. The staff at City Hall gave it to me personally,” Owen narrowed his eyes. “But Nerissa still loves me. She’s just trying to make me regret it and chase after her.
“Who does she think she is? How could I ever love someone like her? Mom, be careful. Since she can’t reach me, she’ll definitely come looking for you.
“Whenever Nerissa gets the chance, she acts up. Don’t give her the time of day.”
After the divorce, Owen wanted nothing more to do with Nerissa.

Evelyn nodded. “Got it, Owen. I’ve already told the butler. If Nerissa shows up, kick her out immediately.”
After making these arrangements with his mother, Owen went to Calloway Group.
At ten thirty that night, a knock sounded through the quiet air.
“Come in.” Owen set the files aside.
Yale Edrington walked in from outside. “Owen, you’re still working this late? You really don’t know how to slow down.” Owen lifted a hand and pressed his fingers to his temples. He looked worn out. “The Group is at a critical stage right now. If I don’t keep a close eye on things, everything below me will fall into chaos.”
It was strange, really. When Nerissa had still been around, Owen had never felt this swamped.
After she left, it seemed as if everything followed suit and piled up all at once.
Yale smiled, “That’s true. The more capable you are, the more you have to carry. By the way, Owen, I heard you managed to poach Wade from Kinsbeat Game?”
“Yes.” Owen nodded.
Yale’s eyes widened.
In the gaming industry, everyone knew that Wade and Clive had been through thick and thin together. When Yale first heard the news, he had assumed it was just a rumor. He never expected it to be real.
“Owen, that’s insane. You’re incredible. Someone once offered Wade a three-million-dollar annual salary, and he still refused to move.” Yale raised his thumb at Owen.
Owen only smiled faintly. “People climb higher when they can. Water flows downhill. Kinsbeat Game is already on its last legs. Wade had every reason to choose a better road.”
Yale nodded. “You’re right, Owen.”
Under Owen’s leadership, Calloway Group now resembled a ferocious beast. It was cutting through the gaming world with unstoppable momentum. Its future was bound to stun the global market.
Compared to Calloway Group, Kinsbeat Game fell far behind.
“I really think you will get this year’s Celestial Dome Awards,” Yale could not help but sigh in admiration.
A look of absolute certainty flickered in Owen’s eyes. ‘The Celestial Dome Awards? Who else could it be but me to get it?’ he thought.
Just then, something occurred to Yale. He continued, “Oh, right, Owen. There’s one more thing.”
“What is it?” Owen asked.
Yale chose his words carefully before speaking. “I heard that Clive recently brought in another top-tier game expert at Kinsbeat Game.
“Within a single month, they pushed out an AAA title and even took home the Celestial Dome Awards.”
“A top-tier expert?” A sharp sense of danger rose in Owen’s chest. “Who?”
“The person goes by Ms. Jamison. I don’t know her full name.” Yale paused for a moment.
Then he added, “Owen, do you think it may be Nerissa? If it really is her, could she pose a threat to Calloway Group?” Although Kinsbeat Game was on the brink of bankruptcy, it still had value to exploit.
Owen had planned to take advantage of the situation and acquire Kinsbeat Game at a low price, He intended to make it his
own.
But now that Nerissa had stepped in out of nowhere, Yale could not help but worry. He feared the acquisition might run into complications.
At the mention of Nerissa’s name, the sense of urgency on Owen’s face vanished at once. It was replaced by undisguised mockery. “I was wondering who this so-called big shot was.
“So it’s her? She’s a useless nobody who didn’t even finish high school. You seriously think she can pull Kinsbeat Game back on track? That’s laughable. She’s completely delusional.”
