Chapter 127
[Thank you.]
Nerissa replied with a simple “Thank you.”
She didn’t deny it.
Which meant her guess was spot on.
She returned to Kindowen.
She was back in Kindowen.
From now on, Kindowen was her home.
Staring at Nerissa’s WhatsApp message, Lennox narrowed his sharp eyes, his gaze dark and unfathomable, like ink you could never see the bottom of.

Kindowen.
Luna, Dunstan, and Anna, the family of three, stood at the airport’s arrival gate with bouquets in hand, waiting for Nerissa’s arrival.
Anna looked annoyed. “Mom, Dad, do we really have to make such a big deal out of this? Why do all three of us have to come to the airport? She’s just some divorced nobody from the countryside!” She thought, ‘Is she even worth us coming to pick her up?’
‘Just thinking about it makes me feel like it’s beneath me!
‘I’m a proper heiress from a distinguished family, after all.’
“We have to keep up appearances,” Dunstan said, glancing at his watch. “Anna, if you want to make it big, you can’t sweat the small stuff. Sure, she’s just some divorced country girl, but she’s also your grandma’s own flesh
and blood.”
After Dunstan finished, Luna chimed in, “It’s not just your grandma and Ariel here today. I heard Mrs. Berenson is coming, along with all eight of the Berenson sons and thirteen of their grandkids.”
Anna’s eyes sparkled. “Mom! For real? Is Dawn coming too?”
Luna nodded. “Absolutely!”
“Awesome!” Instantly, the gloom in Anna’s eyes disappeared.
She hadn’t seen Dawn for a whole week, and she just knew he’d be over the moon to see his little sweetheart again.
‘That spot as the Berenson family’s granddaughter-in-law? It’s mine for sure.’ Anna thought.
‘No one else is getting it. I’m definitely going to be the Berenson family’s granddaughter-in-law!’ Anna told herself.
Just as Luna and Anna were talking, a whole entourage came pouring out of the VIP passageway.
At the very front, Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Berenson stood out, leading the group in style.
Everyone was gathered around Nerissa, placing her right at the center of it all.
She was the center of attention, like the moon with stars orbiting around her.
The whole scene was nothing short of dazzling.
Anna’s brows knitted ever so slightly, her jealousy barely concealed as she looked at Nerissa.
She just knew it, Nerissa was bound to steal everything that was supposed to be hers.
If Nerissa weren’t here, she’d be the one everyone was fawning over right now.
Thank goodness…
Thank goodness Nerissa was just a nobody from the countryside who’d never be one of us.
“Let’s go, Anna,” Luna said, taking Anna’s hand.
The two of them flashed cheerful smiles and headed over to join the others.
Luna hugged Nerissa tight, sobbing. “Arie, is it really you? Nineteen years, I’ve finally found you, Arie!”
Luna’s tears were so genuine, it was like she was holding her own baby in her arms.
Anna started crying too. “Arie, I’m your big sis! Do you remember me?”
Dunstan handed the flowers to Hunter. “You must be Uncle Hunter, right? I’m Arie’s uncle. Thank you for raising her all these years. If it weren’t for you, who knows how much she would’ve suffered!”
The three of them were bawling, each tryin tell it was all fake.
to outdo the other. Their acting was so spot-on, nobody could
“Arie, this is your aunt Luna, your uncle Dunstan, and your
Tiffany went on to introduce everyone to Nerissa. “Arie, this is your aunt Luna, cousin Anna.”
‘Cousin, huh?’ Anna thought, feeling a bit annoyed.
When Tiffany made the introduction, Anna wasn’t too happy about it.
‘Did she really have to put so much emphasis on “cousin”?” Anna thought with a frown.
Anna kept her expression perfectly neutral, her eyes rimmed with tears as she said, “Arie, after all these years,
we’ve finally welcomed you home.”
Nerissa called out to each of them, one by one.
“Luna, Dunstan, Anna,” she said softly.
Luna wiped her tears and linked arms with Nerissa. “Mom, Arie, Tiffany, and all of Arie’s uncles and aunts, let’s head home. The airport isn’t really the place for this. They haven’t seen each other in years. Arie must be dying to see her dad!”
“Yeah, let’s go home,” Tiffany nodded. “Arie, let’s go see your dad.”
Even though Leo had been bedridden for years, Tiffany was convinced he was still aware. If he saw his daughter come back, he’d be over the moon.
Everyone started making their way out of the airport.
?
Anna deliberately slowed her pace, sidling right up to Dustin’s shoulder. “Dawn, was Aosthorne fun?”
“It was alright,” Dawn replied, subtly stepping back.
Seeing Dawn fall a step behind, Anna’s lips curled into a faint smile.
She knew
flustered.
guys could get all shy around the girls they liked, but she never expected Dawn to get so easily
‘Looks like… Anna thought to herself.
‘Dawn really does love me.’
*****
Before long, they arrived at Sullivan Manor.
Luna had spent the last few days transforming the manor, draping festive red silk and banners everywhere, inside and out, making the whole place look ready for a grand celebration.
At the entrance, the butler stood with more than twenty servants, all lined up in perfect formation, ready to greet the returning family with utmost respect.
As soon as Nerissa stepped out of the car,
the butler and all the servants greeted her in perfect unison, “Welcome home, Miss Jamison.”
‘Miss Jamison… Anna thought, jealousy stabbing at her heart.
Hearing that title, it hit Anna hard, her defenses were crumbling.
From now on, she’d just be the cousin in this house, never the true heiress.
‘Damn that little bitch!’ Anna cursed inwardly.
“Okay,” Nerissa replied with a slight nod.
After that, Tiffany guided Nerissa and everyone else over to the part of the manor where Leo stayed.
As soon as they stepped inside,
they saw a wedding photo hanging right in the center of the room.
And there was also a baby photo of Nerissa taken when she was just a month old.
Nerissa’s eyes grew misty as she took in the room, her gaze finally landing on the wedding photo of Leo Sullivan and Charlotte Berenson. Suddenly, she realized why Tiffany and Mrs. Berenson could recognize her the moment they saw her, even without any blood test.
Once inside the bedroom,
there was Leo, right where he always was.
He lay there quietly, just as he always did.
“Dad!” Nerissa called out, but her voice came out hoarse and shaky, the word barely making it past her lips. ‘I can’t believe this is really happening,’ she thought, her heart twisting painfully.
‘I thought I was ready for this, but seeing Dad like this with my own eyes… it hurts way more than I imagined,’ Nerissa admitted to herself, her throat tight with emotion.
Even though she’d tried to prepare herself, actually seeing Leo Sullivan lying there, unresponsive, was a punch to the gut. She couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the reality of it all.
Mrs. Sullivan pressed a handkerchief to her mouth, her voice shaking. “Leo, Arie’s back, she’s finally home!”
Mrs. Berenson hurried to the bedside and grabbed Leo’s hand tight. “Leo, open your eyes and look. Arie’s back! Our Arie’s really home!”
But Leo just lay there, not moving a muscle, totally unresponsive.
The two matriarchs were crying their eyes out, completely losing control.
Even a few of the Berenson uncles were getting teary-eyed.
Suddenly, Verena’s eyes lit up. “Arie, your medical skills are incredible, why don’t you check on Leo? Maybe you can wake him up!”
“Yes, yes!” Mrs. Berenson chimed in, nodding eagerly. “Arie is the reason I’m still alive, maybe she can work her magic on Leo too.”
Nerissa had come prepared, carrying her medical kit with her. She quickly placed a small cushion under Leo’s
wrist and began to check nis puise, ner eyes signty downcast as she focused, her face completely unreadable, no one could tell what she was thinking.
Anna watched Nerissa, her eyes practically dripping with sarcasm.
Just a nobody from the boonies!’ Anna scoffed to herself.
‘Wow, she’s really laying it on thick!’
‘Does she seriously think she’s some genius doctor or something?’
‘What a joke!’
After a few seconds, Nerissa gently withdrew her hand from Leo’s wrist, finishing her pulse check.
Mrs. Sullivan was the first to speak up, her voice trembling with hope. “Arie, does your dad… does he still have a chance to wake up?”
