Chapter 56 Powerless Rage
Owen said he was fine, but Audrey still suggested, “Owen, why don’t you go rest in the lounge for a bit? I can handle things
here.”
“Okay.” Owen nodded and lifted his hand to tuck a loose strand of hair behind Audrey’s ear. “Audrey, sorry to make you deal with this.”
Audrey took both his hands in hers and said gently, “Owen, we’re family now. You don’t need to be so formal with me.”
Normally, Owen would’ve said something more, but today he just didn’t have the energy for another word. His mind was wholly occupied with one question. ‘Why didn’t Nerissa show up?’ he thought.
The whole reason Owen rushed into this engagement with Audrey was to lure Nerissa here to object to it. But Nerissa acted like she couldn’t care less.
Only one thought kept spinning through his head. ‘What the hell is Nerissa trying to do?’ he thought. No one knew just how miserable Owen felt right now.
“I’m gonna head to the lounge,” Owen said and pulled his hand away. He walked toward the lounge without looking back.
Audrey watched him go, and her brows drew together.
She wasn’t stupid. She could tell Owen had been off all night. Especially when he slipped the engagement ring on her finger. His eyes weren’t even on her. He kept looking toward the entrance instead.
‘Who’s he waiting for?’ she thought and narrowed her eyes. She turned to look outside but saw nothing unusual.
Audrey was about to look away when something caught her eye, and she froze. A tall, striking figure emerged from the entrance of Building B, accompanied by a group of people.
‘Is that Nerissa?’ Audrey thought and bit her lip.
A cold look flashed in her eyes. ‘No wonder Owen’s been distracted all night. Nerissa showed up. That shameless bitch is already divorced from him but she still can’t let go. She had to come here and ruin our engagement party. Homewrecker. Disgusting.’
Audrey’s face paled, and her whole body began to shake.
‘Just wait, she thought. ‘I’m gonna make sure that bitch gets kicked out of Aosthorne for good.’
Her hands clenched into tight fists, and her sharp nails dug deep into her palms, but she didn’t even notice the pain.
Owen walked into the lounge. He looked exhausted, and his head was pounding
Someone knocked on the door.
“Come in,” Owen said.
The door pushed open, and Yale stepped inside. “Owen.”
Owen glanced at him but didn’t say anything.
Yale kept going. “You okay?”
Owen pressed his fingers against his temples. “Yale, why didn’t Nerissa show up tonight?”
“Maybe she’s moved on.”
“Impossible.” Owen grabbed the glass on the table and smashed it against the floor. “She loves me. She wouldn’t let go that easily.”
Yale’ let out a soft sigh. “Owen, face reality. Nerissa isn’t the same girl who only had eyes for you anymore.”
“She’s trying to get close to Hendry and Diana. Isn’t that for me?” Owen locked eyes with Yale. “How else do you explain why Nerissa showed up at the Penhaligon family’s banquet?”
Before, Nerissa did everything for him. He liked gray, so Nerissa liked gray.
She followed him around like a puppy every single day. She had no sense of self.
Owen searched Yale’s eyes, trying to find the answer he wanted.
But Yale threw cold water on his hopes. “Faye Penhaligon is around Nerissa’s age, and Faye just personally escorted Nerissa to the car. I think Nerissa and Faye might be friends.”
“Impossible. Absolutely impossible.” Owen’s v Successfully unlocked!ld Ms. Penhaligon be friends with a nobody like Nerissa? She’s only being nice to Hendry and Ora became of ine

Chapter 56 Powerless Rage
The next day, Hunter went to work as usual.
He had just arrived at the office and walked up to the time clock when Kane came out. “Hunter, you don’t need to clock in today.”
“I don’t need to clock in?” Hunter looked at his coworkers nearby. “Mr. Trelawney, are you giving us the day off?”
‘A day off?’ The workers around them perked up at those words.
Nobody wanted to work in this heat, and everyone wanted to stay home and rest.
Kane found this funny. He looked down at Hunter with superiority. “It’s not a day off. You’re fired. Don’t bother coming in tomorrow, and you should take that precious granddaughter of yours back to the countryside. Aosthorne isn’t a place for people like you.”
Hunter panicked, and his face turned pale. “Mr. Trelawney, did I do something wrong? Why am I being fired out of nowhere?”
Kane glanced at him. “I’ll be honest with you. You pissed off the wrong person.”
Ever since Kane found out that Nerissa had ranked first at Yiorlian School, he’d wanted to fire Hunter.
He couldn’t stand the idea of some old janitor’s granddaughter outshining his son, the one he’d spent a fortune grooming.
Unfortunately, his hands had been tied. Company policy meant he couldn’t just fire Hunter without cause.
But now things were different.
Hunter had crossed someone important, and Kane could finally get rid of him without any pushback.
Better yet, no other cleaning company in town would hire him after this.
Hunter and Nerissa would have no choice but to leave Aosthorne for good.
The thought brought a smile of satisfaction to Kane.
“What?” Hunter froze. He knew his age made finding work hard, so he’d always been careful and diligent. He never caused trouble, let alone offended anyone powerful. “Mr. Trelawney, there must be some mistake. I’ve been here all this time and never had a problem with anyone.”
Hunter took a few steps closer, and his voice turned pleading. “Mr. Trelawney, you know my situation. Nerissa’s still in high school and we don’t have any other income. If I lose this job, I might not even be able to pay her tuition and living expenses
this semester.”
He continued, “I can’t lose this job. Please, could you talk to the higher-ups for me? Ask them not to fire me?”
Nerissa had told Hunter countless times to quit, now that she had a steady income. She’d even given him a bank card with over a hundred thousand dollars on it.
But Hunter had never checked the balance, so he had no idea how much money was actually there.
Besides, Hunter saw Nerissa as just a kid, and in his mind a kid couldn’t make that much money even with a stable income. So this job was especially important to Hunter.
The two coworkers standing next to Hunter immediately jumped in. “Yeah, Mr. Trelawney, there’s gotta be some kind of mistake here,” one of them said.
The other chimed in, “Hunter works so hard, and his section? Nobody ever complains about it. Come on, just talk to the higher-ups for him and don’t fire him, please.”
Kane couldn’t be bothered with the coworkers defending Hunter. He twisted the cap off his water bottle and took a sip, then looked at Hunter.
“Look, it’s not that I don’t want to help you,” he said. “I just can’t. Take off your uniform and get out of here. We’ve worked together for a while now, so let’s not make this ugly.”
Hunter stood there frozen. “Mr. Trelawney, please just take pity on an old man like me.”
He was already this old, and the unemployment rate was sky-high. Even young people couldn’t find decent jobs these days. If he got fired now, he’d never find another good position.
Kane narrowed his eyes, and something seemed to click in his mind. “Old Jamison, you really want to stay that badly?”
“Yes.” Hunter nodded. “Mr. Trelawney, if you let me stay, I’ll do anything.”
Kane watched Hunter’s determined expression and smiled. He sat down in a nearby chair and crossed his legs.
“I stepped in dog shit this morning when I was checking the lawn,” he said. “Hunter, since you want to work here so badly. why don’t you wipe all that dog shit off my shoe?”
