Chapter 92

Ն

Zeke just knew that girl had to be the one Lennox could never forget, his crush.

If she wasn’t, would the legendary Mr. Stratford really be giving her a ride on his bike?

God knows!

Zeke was so excited right now.

“Zeke, what’s gotten into you tonight? You keep talking nonsense First you say Uncle Lennox is out eating street food with some girl, and now you claim he’s giving a girl a ride on his bike for a date? Seriously?”

That was insane.

Totally wild.

Zeke whipped out her phone. “You don’t believe me? Fine, I’ll take a picture and prove it to you!”

He immediately tapped the camera button.

But he totally spaced on the fact that both her car and Lennox’s Bike were moving. No way was he getting a clear shot with everything whizzing by.

The photo was just a blur.

Luke laughed. “Where’s the photo? Let me see it!”

“You’re driving so fast. How am I supposed to get a clear shot?” Zeke was fuming.

Luke hit the brakes, pulled over, and glanced at Zeke. “Alright, alight, I’ll go slower. So, where’s Uncle Lennox?”

“Right there!” Zeke said, pointing out the window on his right.

Luke turned to look.

But all he saw was…

Nothing at all.

“Where are they? Didn’t you say Uncle Lennox was out on a date giving some girl a ride?” Luke looked speechless. I knew you were full of it! Isn’t his car flashy enough? Why would Uncle ennox ever be caught dead on a bike? And with a girl on the back? Why not say he’s got a whole squad of girls riding with him?”

Zeke was seriously about to lose it. “Come on, I’m not making this up!”

“I saw it. I really did! It’s your fault for not stopping fast enought Who would’ve thought Mr. Stratford could pedal that fast with someone riding behind him?”

“Alright, alright,” Luke said, nodding with a helpless, perfunctory air. “It’s all my fault, okay? I believe you Is that good enough?”

Seeing Luke act like that only made Zeke feel even more frustrad

‘Why?’ Zeke groaned, his frustration reaching a boiling point.

Why did I catch him in the act? Every single time!’

He was speechless.

Luke fired up the engine and drove off.

After dropping Nerissa off, Lennox finally drove back to his apartment.

By the time he finished his shower and crawled into bed, it was already past two in the morning.

There was a book lying on the nightstand.

It was face down.

Lennox picked it up.

On the page he opened to, the very top line was circled in red.

Rule 21 for Winning a Girl’s Heart. [The most romantic thing in the world is taking her on a thrilling bike ride. Just make sure you go fast, so she’ll have to wrap her arms around your waist.]

As soon as Lennox read that line, the scene from earlier tonight, him riding his bike with Nerissa clinging to his waist, played out in his mind.

‘Who would’ve thought this silly little book actually works?’ Lennox mused with a faint smile.

‘Looks like I need to keep studying up!’ he thought, already flipping to the next page.

That night, Lennox kept at it, studying hard all the way until after three in the morning.

Not only that.

He scribbled down tons of notes, filling up page after page.

Even though he’d stayed up past midnight, when he showed up at the company the next morning, he was as sharp and energetic as ever, not a hint that he’d been up late.

Just as Lennox settled into his executive chair, Luke barged right in.

“Uncle Lennox?” Luke called out.

Lennox looked up, giving him a sidelong glance.

Luke went on, “Did you meet that Go master yesterday?”

“Yeah, I did,” Lennox replied with a slight nod.

“So, how’d it go?” Luke pressed.

Lennox replied, pausing deliberately between each word, “We go along just fine.”

Luke suddenly perked up. “Wait, was it a guy or a girl? You said it was some gorgeous babe, you’d totally hook us up. remember?”

Lennox raised his eyebrows, not giving a straight answer. He just shot back. “Take a guess.”

Seeing Lennox’s reaction, Luke let out a sigh, looking disappointed. “So it really was a guy, huh?”

He’d been holding out hope it’d turn out to be a girl.

“Oh, Uncle Lennox, where did you and that Go master eat last night?” Luke asked.

“Why do you want to know?” Lennox shot Luke a puzzled look.

“Well, last night, I was out grabbing some late-night snacks with Zeke, and he kept insisting he saw you at a street barbecue stall, eating with some girl. Then he swore he saw you riding a bike with her, like you two were on a date! I told him you were out meeting that Go master, but he just wouldn’t believe me. And come on, even if you weren’t meeting some big shot, there’s no way you’d be out eating street food with a girl, right?”

“That’s totally beneath you.”

Luke was just chatting away, but Lennox was suddenly on edge, is nerves tightening with every word.

If Luke had paid any real attention, he’d have seen Lennox looking seriously rattled, and even his hand actually shook when he tried to turn the page.

Luckily,

Luke was just as scatterbrained as ever.

A few seconds later, Lennox glanced up at Luke, his expression calm and casual. “Did you need something?”

That was when Luke finally remembered why he’d come in. “Oh right! I’m meeting someone really important for coffee tomorrow. You’ve got some good coffee, don’t you? Can you share a little with me?”

There was literally no one else in all of Aosthorne or even Kindowen who had such good coffee.

But Lennox had a whole ten pounds of it.

Hearing that, Lennox got up, pulled a small packet out of the cabinet, and handed it over to Luke.

From the look of it,

it weighed 70 or 80 grams tops.

Luke took the packet and complained, “It’s not enough! Come of Uncle Lennox, give me another pack, will you?”

Lennox just shrugged, turned around, and pulled out another small packet for Luke.

Luke’s eyes widened.

‘Holy crap!’ he thought, couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

‘Uncle Lennox, the king of stingy, is actually being generous today!

He just handed over two packets of the world’s best coffee, each bout 70 or 80 grams, like it was nothing.

Normally, he’d never be this generous.

‘What the hell is going on?!’

‘Guess I’m really important to Uncle Lennox, Luke thought, feeling a rush of pride.

The more Luke thought about it, the more he could barely contain his excitement.

“This one’s gonna cost you. One hundred grand. Cash or transfe” Lennox said.

Luke just stared, speechless. Seriously?’

He sighed.

“You’re charging me?” Luke was about to lose it. “Uncle Lennox, are you sure I’m your nephew?”

“This is the best coffee that even money can’t buy. You really think I’d just give away a packet to someone who’s not even blood? And this one? I’m basically handing it to you at a massive discount. Or, I’ll give you one hundred grand, and you try to find me a packet out there?”

Luke was left speechless. ‘As much as I hate to admit it, Uncle Lennox’s got a point,’ he thought.

One hundred grand normally wouldn’t get him such good coffee

Eighty grams? Dream on.

Even 8 grams was out of reach at that price…

“Alright, I’ll transfer it,” Luke grumbled, but still whipped out his phone and sent the money over in a flash.

Only after the transfer notification popped up on his phone did Lennox finally hand over the packet to Luke.

“Thanks, Uncle Lennox.” Luke said, laying it on thick.

September 1st.

It was the first day of school.

Nerissa and Faye showed up at Yiorlian School right on time to register.

Luckily for them, they both ended up in Class 1.

Nerissa glanced at the class assignment board and grinned. “Fifi, looks like we really are meant to be together!”

There were thirty transfer students in total, and twenty-five senior homerooms. On average, each homeroom would only get one or two new students. The odds of her and Faye ending up in the same class were insanely low.

It was basically like winning a million-dollar lottery.

“Haha,” Faye said, looping her arm through Nerissa’s. “Honestly,’s not just fate. My dad worked his money magic behind

the scenes!”

“No wonder,” Nerissa replied with a soft laugh.

Nerissa and Faye beaded to the office to check in first.

Their homeroom teacher was Mr. Winfield, and he looked super approachable.

“Nerissa, Faye, right? Come with me.” Mr. Winfield said with a friendly smile.

Senior year was all about stress and monotony. Students were bied in practice problems day in and day out, and even gym class was a luxury they couldn’t afford.

Trying to guess if the new transfer students were boys or girls, and whether they were cute or not, was pretty much the only fun anyone had.

“I heard the new transfer students are Nerissa and Faye. Judging by those names, they’re probably both girls, huh?”

Chapter 92

“Not necessarily! My name is Jessie, but I’m a boy!”

The boy who spoke up was a sunny, good-looking one.

His parents named him Jessie before he was born, thinking it was girl.

Thanks to that name, everywhere he went, people just assumed he was a girl as soon as they saw the name.

“Haha, fair enough! But honestly, Faye just sounds way too girly to be a boy’s name. As for Nerissa… you know, the name means peace and happiness, and it could go either way. I’m guessing Nerissa’s probably a boy.”

Hearing that, Betty, who was always at odds with Jessie, couldn’t help but jump in. “Nerissa sounds way too pretty to be a boy! I bet she’s a total knockout!”

“Yeah, for sure! Nerissa totally sounds like the name of a beautiful girl,” someone else chimed in.

Jessie squinted. “Come on, you really think a total babe could snag first place in the whole school? Bet you guys didn’t know, Nerissa scored 1420 on the transfer exam! Is it even possible for girl to be that smart? The top three in our school are all boys, so it’s pretty obvious Nerissa’s a boy too.”

“True that!”

“Top three every month? Always boys. Only two girls ever made it into the top ten. Nerissa scored 1420, fifteen points higher than Charles, our best student! Honestly, Jessie is probably right No way a girl could beat Charles.”

Charles was the perennial number one at Yiorlian School.

No matter the exam, he’d never budged from the top spot.

But after the transfer student exam, that ironclad throne was finally toppled.

Betty snapped, her voice full of irritation. “Jessie, Brody, you guys just look down on girls! What do you mean, only boys can beat Charles? You really think girls aren’t as good as you boys?”

Jessie turned to Betty, smirking. “What’s the big deal if I look down on girls? I’m just telling the truth. Only two girls ever cracked the top ten here, and they were stuck at seventh and ninth. If Nerissa’s actually a girl, I’ll run naked around the school track! But if you lose, if Nerissa’s a boy, then it’s your turn to streak!”

“Deal! Naked run it is!” Betty fired back, totally unfazed.

Just as the argument hit its peak, Mr. Winfield popped up at the front of the classroom out of nowhere. Quiet! Look at yourselves, then look at Class 2 and Class 3. Seriously, you guys are the worst class I’ve ever had!”

Everyone clammed up the moment Mr. Winfield spoke, not daring to make a sound.

It was like someone hit the pause button on the whole room.

“Next up, let me introduce our two new classmates. First, Faye Phaligon. Let’s give her a warm welcome!”

Faye walked in, looked out at her new classmates, and said contently, “Hi everyone, I’m Faye Penhaligon Nice to meet you.”

Her introduction was followed by

a thunderous round of applause.

“Turns out Faye really is a girl, and a total knockout!”

“She’s so pretty!”

“She’s such a cutie!”

“So if Faye’s a girl, Nerissa must be a boy for sure!”

“Looks like Betty is about to lose her bet!”

Mr. Winfield continued, “And now, let’s welcome our second new classmate, Nerissa Jamison, who scored a whopping 1420 on the transfer exam! Let’s give her a big round of applause!”

‘Here she is!’ The whole class was buzzing with anticipation.

‘Finally, the moment we’ve been waiting for!’ Everyone was practically vibrating with excitement.

At that, everyone whipped their heads toward the door.
