Chapter 95
Back then, Ivy had seen Nerissa and Faye waiting in line outside hole-in-the-wall joint.

But if Faye really was the Penhaligon heiress, why would she eve be caught dead waiting in line at a place like that?
What kind of family was the Penhaligon family, anyway?
They were true high society.
No way would the Penhaligon heiress ever eat at some run-down spot that could hurt her reputation.
Even Ivy wouldn’t be caught dead eating there!
Besides,
Nerissa, a divorced woman, how could she ever get close to the Penhaligon heiress?
People hang out with their own kind.
Anyone could see Faye wasn’t the Penhaligon heiress.
Faye was just another nobody barely scraping by, same as Neriss
Ivy’s words instantly threw open the doors to Alice’s memory.
Her eyes widened as she turned to Ivy. “Oh, that’s right! I remember now. I saw Faye too. Last month, when Ivy and I were out shopping, we spotted Faye and Nerissa lining up outside that little hole-in-the-wall place.”
“What is the name of the restaurant?”
Ivy said, “The Munch.”
As for why Ivy wanted to know the name of that hole-in-the-wall it was because Dylan, always trying to pinch pennies, had eaten there all the time.
But once Winifred and Dylan got their business up and running. Dylan hadn’t set foot in that place again.
After all, the Holloway family had finally made it out of poverty
Alice nodded right away. “Yeah, the Munch.”
Then she turned to Linda. “Linda, you have no idea how nasty that place is. The only people lining up there are janitors and cab drivers, just folks from the bottom rung of society. The priciest dish is like 6 bucks. Honestly, Ivy’s totally right. If the Penhaligon heiress really was Faye, there’s no way she’d be caug dead eating at a dump like that with Nerissa.”
When Linda heard the most expensive dish at that hole-in-the-all was only 6 bucks, her eyes were full of pure disgust.
Is food that cheap even fit for humans?’ she thought.
Even their dog food cost 20 bucks a pound!
“So, Faye really can’t be the Penhaligon heiress!” Linda said, frowning in contusion “Wait, did I get her name wrong? Doesn’t her name start with a 17”
Ivy glanced at Linda and said, “Maybe you got it wrong”
“Maybe I did.” Linda echoed.

“Yeah,” Ivy nodded.
Linda asked, “Why are you bringing this up all of a sudden?”

“Because there’s a transfer student named Selene Penhaligon,” I continued. “She got assigned to Class 18. From where our class sits, we can’t see her.”
The reason they could spot Nerissa was because she was in Class.
And their class was Class 2.
Alice shook her head. “I don’t think Selene is the heiress. The Penhaligon family definitely wouldn’t want Ms. Penhaligon out in the open. And the Penhaligon surname is super rare, but suddenly, five people with that surname transferred to our school at the same time. Isn’t that kind of suspicious? Maybe the Penhaligon family is pulling some strings behind the
scenes.”
Ivy and Linda both nodded, totally agreeing with Alice’s take.
There were only 30 transfer students in total.
And five of them had the last name Penhaligon, and every single one was a girl.
It was obvious the Penhaligon family was just trying to throw everyone off and keep the real Ms. Penhaligon under wraps.
Linda went on, “We still don’t know who the real Penhaligon heiress is, but we can start crossing names off the list. Faye’s definitely out, so that leaves four girls. One of them has got to be Ms. Penhaligon!”
Linda might’ve been the wealthiest of the three. But just like Alice and Ivy, she was hoping to get close to Ms. Penhaligon
too.
Everyone wanted to move up in the world.
Who wouldn’t want to level up in life?
If she could get in with Ms. Penhaligon, she’d finally get access to circles her family could never reach, and expand her network.
For anyone in business, connections were resources.
Ivy lowered her head and blinked.
‘Linda’s right, Ivy thought.
They’d already crossed Faye off the list, so now it was down to the other four. High society folks were a whole different breed from regular people. If she kept her eyes peeled, she was bound o sniff out the real Ms. Penhaligon.
And then, she’d do whatever it took to become Ms. Penhaligon’s losest friend!
I’m going to succeed, no matter what!’ Ivy vowed to herself.
With that thought, Ivy glanced up at Nerissa in the crowd wih ay smile.
‘Who cares if Nerissa is the top student at Yiorlian School?’ Ivy seered.
Just you wait.’
‘Once I become Ms. Penhaligon’s closest friend, marrying into high society will be a breeze. Then, I’ll make sure Nerissa stays beneath me forever!’

‘That divorced small-town girl Nerissa, what makes her think she can even go up against me?’ Ivy scoffed to herself.
After the big break, Class 1 was the first to leave the playground.
Nerissa and Faye walked side by side.
Tiana caught up to them. “Nerissa, you were amazing up there! That’s the first time I’ve ever gotten so pumped up from a speech.”
That feeling was honestly kind of surreal.
It was almost like…
Like Nerissa was just meant to own the stage, like she was born for the spotlight.
“Really?” Nerissa smiled at Tiana.
“Absolutely! It wasn’t just us, even the principal and all the teachers were left speechless. Nerissa, seriously, you’re like a legend! I’ve never met a girl as awesome as you!” Tiana gushed.
Yiorlian School had always been a total boys’ club.
There were way more boys than girls.
So, most of the top spots were snagged by the boys.
Out of the top ten students in the whole school, only two were girls.
The top hundred? That was even crazier.
Out of the top hundred students, only 18 were girls!
So whenever there were speeches or big school events, it was pretty much always the boys taking the spotlight, and girls barely got a shot.
Then Nerissa came along and flipped the script.
Nerissa just smiled and said, “There’s always someone better out here. Honestly, there are plenty of people who are way more impressive than I am.”
She wasn’t just putting on a show of false modesty.
It just came naturally to her.
She never once got cocky or full of herself, even after her speech was such a hit.
Tiana hooked her arm through Nerissa’s. “I don’t care what anyone says. You’re the most amazing girl in the whole world, as far as I’m concerned!”
“Same here!” Faye chimed in, grabbing Nerissa’s other arm.
“Excuse me, Nerissa! Please wait a moment!”
Just as they were about to reach the classroom, there suddenly me a male voice from behind.
Nerissa stopped and turned around.
The man who called out to her looked about seventeen or eighteen.

Chapter 95
He was wearing the same blue-and-white school uniform as everyone else.
He had that bright, handsome look, full of youthful energy.
He looked just like the leading man from a coming-of-age novel
Tiana’s eyes widened, and she bit her lips, leaning in to whisper in Faye’s ear, “That’s Charles! Charles!”
“Who’s Charles?” Faye asked, genuinely curious.

Tiana filled her in, “Charles was the reigning top student at our school. Before Nerissa showed up, he was always number one! Besides, he’s the school hunk, you know.”
Faye’s eyes lit up. “Whoa! Is he seriously about to confess his love to Nerissa?”
If she wasn’t so obsessed with Lennox and Nerissa as a couple, she might’ve shipped Nerissa and Charles.
Honestly, Charles was actually pretty good-looking.
Tiana nodded. “Totally! Nerissa’s only been in our class for two days and she’s already got a pile of love letters thicker than a phone book. Charles’s got guts, confessing in front of everyone like this. I always thought he was just a total nerd who only cared about grades!”
Nerissa just gave Charles a calm look. “What’s up?”
“I won’t deny it, you’ve got skills, and you’re a great speaker,” Charles said, meeting Nerissa’s gaze with determination. “But when the monthly exams roll around next month, I’m taking the top spot!”
Charles was a total perfectionist. He had this obsessive need to be number one in every single exam, ever since he was a kid.
This time, though, he had slipped up and lost his spot at the top.
Since he knew the runner-up wasn’t much competition, he hadn’t put much effort into this month’s exam.
He had figured he’d still be comfortably holding onto first place
But then, out of nowhere, Nerissa showed up and snatched the down right from him!
When they heard Charles, Tiana and Faye just looked at each other, completely stunned.
‘Seriously?’ they both thought.
‘What’s wrong with him?’
‘So after all that, he just came over to throw down a challenge?’
“Alright,” Nerissa laughed, “good luck. Anything else?”
“Yeah, Charles replied.
“What is it?” Nerissa asked.
“Uh, could you…” Charles stammered, scratching his head, his cheeks flushing as he struggled to get the words out. “Could
you…”
Seeing Charles act all flustered, Tiana narrowed her eyes. “Bet you a pack of chips, he’s totally about to ask Nerissa for her
number!”
Faye nodded. “Make it two packs. I’m with you. He’s definitely going for it.”

After wrestling with himself for a while, Charles finally just went for it and looked up at Nerissa. “Nerissa, could I borrow your test paper? The one you scored 1420 on?”
Know your opponent if you want to win.
Playing it safe was Charles’s style.
Studying Nerissa’s test was the only way to figure out how strong she really was.
That was his ticket to taking her down next month.
When they heard that, Faye and Tiana were left totally dumbfounded.
‘Seriously?’ they both thought.
‘He’s weird.’
‘Seriously, with an absolute stunner like Nerissa right in front of him, he’s not even trying to get her number, and he’s asking for her test paper?’
“Sure,” Nerissa nodded. “Wait here for a sec.”
Charles froze for a moment, looking genuinely stunned.
“You’re really gonna let me borrow it?” he blurted out.
When it came to top students, the rivalry was brutal. No one in his right mind would ever hand over his test paper to a competitor. Just one extra point could mean losing his direct admission ticket to a top university.
Seriously, this was a first for Charles. He’d never met anyone as chill and open as Nerissa.
“Yeah, you heard me right,” Nerissa replied.
She was back in a flash and handed him the test paper. “Here you go.”
Charles took it, feeling like this was unreal. “Wait, seriously, why are you letting me borrow your test paper?”
“Because I’m a good person,” Nerissa joked.
“Thanks,” Charles said, giving her a sincere nod. “I’ll make sure to get it back to you within the week.”
“No rush,” Nerissa replied.
Once Charles left, Tiana and Faye immediately crowded around Nerissa.
Tiana asked, “Nerissa, aren’t you worried that after Charles sees your test paper, he’ll beat you in the next monthly exam? He’s seriously scary. Everyone calls him the exam robot.”
“Not at all,” Nerissa replied. “I love a good challenge.”
Tiana gave her a big thumbs-up.
Stratfordland.
It was the 15th.
The Stratford family always had their monthly get-together on this day.

Luke, already in an apron, grinned at Hannah. “Mom, Dad and I are gonna show off our cooking skills tonight!”
Hannah’s face lit up with anticipation. “Oh, I can’t wait!”
Putting everything else aside, Ethan really knew his way around the kitchen.
His cooking was seriously top-notch.
It had been ages since she’d last gotten to enjoy her son-in-law’s food, so it was a real treat that he actually felt like cooking tonight.
“Mom, let me show you what I’ve got too!” Riley sprang up, rolling up her sleeves like she was ready to go all out in the kitchen.
Hannah jumped up, hands on her hips, shooting Riley a look. “Sit down right now! No abusing your elders!”
‘I’m not ready to kick the bucket yet!’ Hannah grumbled to herself.
“Mom,” Riley said, exasperated, “Come on, do you really not trust my cooking at all?”
Hannah let out a dry laugh and gave her a look. “Ha! Even the dog wouldn’t eat what
Riley shot back, “Hey, that’s not true! Last time, Lennox and Luke actually ate it!”
Luke was left speechless.
Hannah shot back, “Those two bachelors? Do they even count as real people?”
Luke was left speechless again.
Lennox pushed open the door and stepped inside.

Luke hurried over to him. “Uncle Lennox, come on, let’s go cook together in the kitchen!”
“I can’t cook,” Lennox said calmly.
Luke grinned. “No worries, you can always learn! I just picked itp myself. Men who can cook are seriously cool, you know?”
Honestly, he was already totally in love with himself.
Lennox slowly took off his suit jacket and handed it to a maid, hvoice cold and aloof. “The kitchen isn’t my battlefield, the office is. If you two want to slum it in there, be my guest, but dot drag me down with you. Not in this lifetime will you catch me cooking, thanks.”
