Arnold’s tears trailed down from the corners of his eyes.
“Madam Grace, Miss Aurora has suffered enough. She grew up without a mother’s love.”
He let out another heavy sigh. “And in the end, her own mother poured all that affection on someone else’s child. Tell me, how could Miss Aurora not feel wronged?”
Grace fell silent at those words.
Her mind drifted back to the photos Arnold had found—Tessa standing beside her biological father, the two of them looking perfectly at ease together.
Grace didn’t know what to feel. Her whole life seemed trapped in regret, guilt, and memories.
And she had let herself be deceived time and time again, foolishly trusting everything Tessa said.
Realizing that, she felt ashamed at how ridiculous she had been.
Seeing her expression, Arnold’s own heart grew heavy.
“Madam Grace, I never meant to blame you. I only hoped you would finally do some reflection.
“You do care about Miss Aurora. You simply expressed that love in the wrong way.”
He recalled the last time Aurora returned home. At first, the two had actually spoken calmly.
“That day when Miss Aurora returned, I told her to speak with you calmly and sort things out.”
“You really told her that?”
Grace looked at him in surprise. She hadn’t expected Arnold to take such initiative.
Grace looked at him, noting his gray hair and the earnest expression on his face, and her chest tightened with discomfort.
He had served this household for so many years. She knew his character better than anyone.
How could she possibly watch an old man, already so close to retirement, pack his things in shame and leave the home he had devoted his life to, only to return to his hometown in defeat?
If she sent him away now, what would his family think of him?
The thought softened her heart again.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear anything today. And I’ll take your words seriously.”
“Do you really mean that?”
