Chapter4.

In my free time, I looked for a new apartment, dealt with his gifts–anniversary presents, birthday presents, Valentine’s Day presents, bonding day presents.. even the engagement ring went. What use were these remnants of a dead relationship?

That evening, Windy Anderson, the owner of Grande Bistro, invited me to a club. It was almost eleven in the evening, and I wasn’t keen to go, but considering my need to network after leaving Horizon Group and starting my own business, I went.

Windy greeted me. “Windy, I can go up by myself, why did you come down?”

She linked arms with me as we entered the elevator.“Sis, I’m afraid you might get lost. You haven’t been here before, have you?”

I hadn’t.

She took me to a large private room; a large Chinese–style screen divided the space in two.

I noticed people on the other side of the screen, but Windy didn’t take me there. She led me to a table where a woman sat alone, someone I vaguely recognized. I think she was the girlfriend of one of Jason’s friends.

She seemed to recognize me too, a little uncomfortable but still smiled.

After I sat down, Windy left.

I took a sip of my drink, and snippets of conversation drifted from the other side of the screen–conversation that turned to me.

“Jason doesn’t bring Sophia Wells to our gatherings anymore.”

“Duh, Ms. Cooper is so young and cute. He takes her everywhere now, treating her like a princess, like the real partner of our Head Warrior.”

“Jason finally changed his taste.”

“No matter how beautiful Sophia Wells is, after seven years, he’s probably tired of her.”

“She’s such a fool, following Jason for so many years, only to end up being played. If Jason dumps her, I’ll gladly take care of her. I’ve lusted after that thin waist for years! I don’t mind she’s been used!”

My eyes turned icy. I recognized two of the voices–Jason’s friends, who’d previously called me “sister–in–law” with sugary

sweetness.

The woman beside me was too embarrassed to look at me, expecting me to flee.
