Eighth-Born Luna (Emily and Nathan) novel Chapter 64

Nathan’s POV

I’ll do more than hurt you if I smell you near her again,I whispered, my voice sounding like grinding stone. I

will break you.

I didn’t wait for her to answer.

Guards! Get this trash out of my sight.

They dragged her out as she screamed my name.

You’ll regret this, Nathan. You’re choosing the wrong girl.

The door slammed, leaving only the scent of her fake perfume and my echoing rage.

I turned back to the bed. I dropped to my knees and took Emily’s cold hand.

I won’t let anyone touch you again,I vowed.

I could have sworn I saw her finger twitch. I fell asleep in the chair, clutching her hand in mine, hoping to catch even the smallest sign of life.

I woke up in the middle of the night. I looked around the room, confused. Why the hell did I wake up? The room had a soft orange glow. It was coming from the bedside lamp next to Emily’s bed.

I took her hand in mine and gasped.

She was so hot.

My hand immediately went to her forehead, and I froze.

Nurse!I shouted and ran toward the door.

The nurse came running into the room.

She is burning up!I said as soon as she walked inside.

What is wrong with her?I asked frantically.

I don’t know, Alpha, the nurse said as she took her temperature. Probably an infection.

My heart started beating painfully. An infection?

I will get the doctor, she said and ran out of the room.

Her cheeks were pink from the fever, and there were a few little beads of sweat on her forehead. I used my hand

to wipe them away.

The doctor came running inside.

9:47 am

Alpha,he said. Can you please move so I can examine her?

I growled, my protective instincts flaring, but I reluctantly moved out of the way.

Doctor Reed instantly started examining her.

Suddenly, Emily’s entire body began to violently shake on the bed. Her spine arched in a sickening, painful bend.

Hold her down! Pin her to the bed, now!Doctor Reed barked.

I lost control of my calm facade. 1 lunged forward and used my weight to hold her thrashing body flat against the

mattress. Please, Emily, stop.

Nurse! Bring the cooling blankets, fast!he commanded, his voice tight.

What’s wrong, doc?I demanded, my hands trembling as I held my mate. What’s happening to her?

I don’t know. An infection, probably. He quickly injected something into her arm.

Slowly, her body stopped arching, falling limp against the sheets.

Is she better?I asked, a raw, suffocating pain bleeding into my voice.

No,Doctor Reed whispered, his face turning pale. It means she is getting worse. Her body is shutting down.

The nurse rushed in with the cooling blankets. We wrapped Emily’s burning body tightly, and after a few agonizing noments, her fever finally started to drop.

Understand me, Alpha,Doctor Reed sighed heavily. We are only treating the symptoms. We have to get her ever down, but we don’t know the real cause of what’s killing her. At this point, only a miracle can save her.

I stared at her flushed, sweaty face. My beautiful, fragile mate.

Sweetheart, I will get you that miracle.

I bolted out of the room, running faster than I ever had in my life. Beta Blake sprinted right out of the hospital

ifter me.

Alpha, where the hell are you going?Blake’s voice slammed into my mind through our mindlink.

“Where is the witch? Is Zynair still in the dungeons?I demanded, my heart hammering against my ribs as I hit

he dark woods.

No, she was let go two hours ago. She’s back at her cottage.

I pushed my legs, tearing through the pack until I reached the witch’s cottage. I didn’t care about manners. I lammed my fists against her door as hard as I could, nearly breaking the wood.

Inside, the lights flickered on, and heavy footsteps approached.

Who is it?Zynair’s sleepy, irritated voice called out from behind the door.

Zynair, open the damn door! I need you!

She unlocked it, and Lpushed right past her, forcing my way inside.

Do you even know what time it is?she snapped, completely annoyed.

I don’t care! Just help me.

Calm down, Alpha, she sighed, rolling her eyes as she walked over to the stove to put a kettle on. What’s the

problem?

Emily. She is dying,I choked out, my pride completely gone. The doctor said only a miracle can save her.
