Eighth-Born Luna (Emily and Nathan) novel Chapter 63

I was sitting in the waiting room, staring at a white wall.

I don’t think I have ever been in so much pain.

When I saw Emily lying there, all beaten and covered in blood, with that rogue touching her, I felt a wave of anger

like never before. My wolf turned into a monster.

Nathan! My mom’s panicked voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I stood up and hugged her. I needed it. I needed my mom to tell me that everything was going to be okay.

Near her was Jessie with Liam and Marcus.

How is she?Jessie asked with a trembling voice.

I don’t know. Her brother Blake sighed, leaning against the wall. She was barely breathing when we found her.

Jessie sobbed, and my mom gasped loudly.

She will be okay,I said with a shaky voice. She has to be okay.

The door opened, and the doctor walked outside. Everybody jumped up and ran toward him.

I almost knocked him down.

Alpha Nathan, the doctor said and took a step back from me.

How is she?Meredyth asked

We managed to stabilise her,the doctor said. She is still in critical condition. He pumped so much wolfsbane into her that I was really surprised to see her alive. She should be dead.

I growled loudly. My heart was beating painfully. I was so close to losing her forever. My hands were shaking, and

Asher was constantly whining.

She lost a lot of blood, the doctor continued, ignoring our growls. He cut her deeply several times. He broke two of her ribs, and she has bruises all over her body. Due to having so much wolfsbane in her body, she couldn’t heal fast. We need to remove all the wolfsbane from her body in order for her to heal. I don’t think she will wake up

until we do.

I didn’t know what to say. My heart was breaking. This was all my fault. She was in that room, fighting for her life,

because of me.

Suddenly, the heart monitor inside her room let out a loud, terrifying, continuous beep, shattering the silence. Her heart had stopped.

Hearing the flatline, the doctor and nurses instantly rushed into Emily’s room.

2:47 am

Wait!I yelled in absolute terret, gripping my chest. What is going on?

I grabbed one of the nurses by the arm right at the doorway, desperate for answers.

Her heart stopped, Alpha!she cried out, her eyes darting down to my tight grip. Please let me go!

My fingers went numb, and I let go. watched the horror unfold as if I were stuck if a nightmare.

They ripped her gown open and pressed the defibrillator paddles to her chest.

Clear!the doctor roared.

The shock hit her. Her fragile body arched high off the bed in a cruel, unnatural bend before slamming back down

onto the mattress.

No pulse!the nurse yelled. Again! Clear!

Another shock tore through her.

I forced myself to turn away, unable to watch her body suffer like this. My chest was suffocating under the weight of it all. I was terrified of losing her. I was angry at myself, jealous of the death trying to steal her away, and completely broken. I needed my mate. I needed to feel her warmth, to breathe in her delicious strawberry scent.

She was the only one in the entire world who could calm the raging beast inside me right now.

We have a pulse!

A shaky breath escaped my lips. I looked back at her. Her tiny, broken body looked so helpless, completely

covered in wires and terrifying machines.

There were no words to describe the agony I was feeling.

Doctor Reed finally stepped out of the room, wiping sweat from his forehead. Alpha, can I speak to you for a

moment?

I couldn’t even speak. I just nodded dumbly.

We walked a few steps away into a quiet corner.

I don’t know how to put this gently, Alpha,Doctor Reed began, his voice heavy with defeat. But judging by what I just saw, we barely brought her back from the dead. And honestly, she is barely alive right now.

I took a deep, shaky breath, trying to hold myself together.

She isn’t reacting to anything, the doctor continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. It’s like she is trapped deep inside her own mind. Or worseshe is standing right at the edge.

What damn edge?I growled, the darkness inside me snapping.

The edge of the afterlife, Alpha. The point of no return.

Then pull her back!I roared, my Alpha aura flaring so violently that everyone in the hallway turned to look at

  1. us.

Alpha, please understand, we are doing everything humanly and wolfly possible,Doctor Reed pleaded, his

hands shaking. But right now, we are powerless. We are pumping her with clean blood, flushing out the wolfsbane. But the rest is up to her. Or the Moon Goddess.

So what am I supposed to do? Just watch her die?!

Silence was my only answer.

Stay strong, Alpha,Doctor Reed whispered, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze before walking away.

Can I see her?I called out to him, my voice cracking.

He paused and turned around. Yes. That’s the best thing you can do for her right now. Maybejust maybe, your

mate bond and the sound of your voice will guide her back.

I walked into the room, the heavy scent of copper and sickness drowning out her sweet smell.

Hi, baby,I said softly, leaning closer to her pale face. “I am here. I am right here. I will never leave you again.

Pleasecome back to me.

I pulled up a chair and sank into it, feeling weaker than I ever had in my life. I gently took her cold, fragile hand in mine, using my thumb to rub small circles on her palm, desperately trying to warm her skin.

Please, Emily. Come back to me. Fight. Don’t leave us. We need you. I need you.

The doctor says you can hear us,I whispered, tears finally blurring my vision. I need you to know how deeply sorry I am. I was a complete, arrogant idiot. It is entirely my fault this happened to you. I just hopethat one day

you can forgive me.

I never moved my gaze from her face. How I wished that she would open her eyes. But there was nothing. She was completely still.

I placed her hand on my cheek, needing to feel her touch.

I was a terrible mate.I sighed. I rejected you without giving you a chance. And I was wrong, Emily. I was so wrong. I can’t begin to explain how sorry I am. I should have stopped her. I should have protected you. But I am not going anywhere. I will not leave you again. You are mine, and I hope you can forgive me. I hope you will let me be

he mate you deserve.
