Walking into the kitchen, the staff had an amazing spread for us. Along the middle of the table was different pastas, garlic bread, salad and veggies. Everything was steaming and made my mouth water just looking at it. I decided to go with my favorite, Garlic Buttery Shrimp Linguine with 2 garlic bread rolls. I saw Grant choose Manicotti with one garlic bread and a bowl of salad that he topped with ranch and croutons.
We ate in silence. As I heard the crunch of his croutons, I couldn’t help but to think of what his life must have been like. Why didn’t he come into my life sooner? Did he even know about me? Did my dad and him not get along? I had like a thousand things I wanted to ask him, but I was trying to be patient and let the man eat.
“If you don’t stop bouncing your leg…” Grant said as he smiled at me.
I didn’t realize how nervous I was getting as my body was literally bouncing with it. “Sorry! I just have so many questions” I said as I sighed and forced my body to relax.
“I’ll start from the beginning, okay?”
I grabbed a shrimp and shoved it into my mouth to keep me from interrupting him. Manners, Nina, manners.
“Like the book said, the Moon Goddess gave our ancestors gifts to help us stand out and rule the kingdom. A select few families did not like this and were jealous. They would find unmated youth girls and claim to be their mates and force them to mate and mark them in hopes they would develop abilities of their own. It obviously didn’t work so they decided to overthrow the family in hopes the Moon Goddess would see them as more powerful and they would be a better fit to rule. However, once we were all killed, the families couldn’t decide who would be the next ruler, so they decided to create the Council. The council would have the powers of the king and queen, but it would be decided between them instead of one person. However, they let the power go to their heads the last few decades and things have taken a long downhill spiral.” Grant paused and a good few bites of his pasta and continued.
“Your grandparents, my mom and dad and your dad’s parents, were rouges. Our family has never stayed in the same pack for more than a few years, always bouncing around so that no one could or would see the markings that would paint us as their decedents. You see, every time someone from our bloodline is found, the council instantly finds something they did wrong, even falsely accusing them and killing them so they will not interrupt their power. There was a daughter, my sister. She was killed by her mate when he found out who she was. Since she didn’t have any abilities, he deemed her worthless. I managed to keep our kinship a secret. Your dad and I got along good, but we chose very different paths. I wanted to put an end to this and kill those responsible for killing our family. Your dad just wanted to live peacefully. Then he had you and when you were born, you came out with your eyes glowing, and they knew you were the one the prophesy talked about. I vowed to protect you from afar and I have, and he protected you from up close. He worked his way up to beta, so he would always be in the ‘know’ if any threats came your way and I would intercept them before they got that far. I know he grilled you and probably forcefully taught you to be strong and how to handle situations. You did wonderful in the meeting, by the way.” Grant said, pointing his fork at me.
I felt a swell of pride at that. My dad did grill me hard, and I know I can do this because of him. This man, my uncle, who I don’t even know, is praising me. My parent’s death is still so new that it was nice to feel like I made someone proud of me. “Thank you, Grant”
“When I saw you at the other pack, I was following up on ‘the Bandits’. There was word that they were following you in that area and I was trying to get there before they got you. Luckily, you managed to kill them. However, the issue with that is that they usually do business with a member of the council. There is no direct evidence, so I haven’t been able to stop it but I have had my suspicions for a while now. When I saw you coming out of the bathroom, I just knew who you were. You look so much like your parents. But I knew I couldn’t tell you who I was at that moment. Also, at the mall, I had to intercept a rogue trying to surprise you. I wanted to get a quick look at you to make sure you were okay before I left. You looked beautiful, by the way. Just like your mom.”
That made me blush thinking about that day. I really liked that dress too. “She was a beautiful lady” I said as I pulled my right knee to my chest and rested my chin on it as he kept going.
“Either way, I know the council will not back down now and will be coming for blood.”
I started to feel uneasy. The Moon Goddess said I couldn’t tell anyone other than Reed and Wyatt what I needed to do in the Council’s head-courters, but could he help me?
“I plan on turning myself in for questioning” I said. I barely got the words out before his head snapped up. He had a ‘what the hell’ look at that made me start questioning myself. “I can’t tell you everything, I can tell you the Moon Goddess spoke to me and guided me. I am on a mission, and this is one of my stops. I am only telling you so you can continue to help me while I am in there being tortured. Yes, I know I will be tortured too.”
“That is insane!” Grant said as he leaned back in his chair. “I guess I can’t argue with the Moon Goddess and that makes sense now what Wyatt said in training…” he left off as he was deep in thought.
“I know what I will have to endure and what I need to do while I am there.”
