I drifted in and out of consciousness catching glimpse of the events around me. Every time I started to see things again, the pain of all my broken bones and injuries came back full force, pushing me back into darkness. It was all I could do to even catch a glimpse of what was happening. Mary had been caring me, basically, as we ran to the check point. I remember watching her fall down and yell out in pain, but I could remember from what. Justin’s face was something that jogged my memory as well. He was running towards us as someone from behind him was covering him with gunfire. Next thing I know, I am in the back of a vehicle on my back and my shirt was ripped open. The cold air attacked my open wounds. I hear the whimpers of Mary somewhere beside me. Looking around, and not being able to find her was hard. Was I imagining that? Or was it me that was whimpering? The bumps in the road hurt like a bitch every time they hit one. Hearing someone yell ‘faster! Faster!’ stuck out at me.
Was I dying? Every now and then, I would have new sharp shooting pains in my legs or arms that would suck me back into the darkness. The darkness was calm, painless, safe but yet alone. Every time I started hearing things, it was bright and painful. I liked the darkness. It hurt less.
As I saw the bright lights and loud voices, I only had one thought. My evidence! I somehow found my pocket, but I couldn’t get it out. I felt a hand reach into my pocket and empty it. I remember feeling relief they figured out what I wanted before I decided the darkness was the place to be.
I found a warm place to lay down and relax. I don’t know how long I was there, but a light appeared in the distance. Deciding I needed to go to the light, I got up and started walking to it. Slowly, at first, then faster and faster, I walked till I was practically running full speed for it. Eventually, the light dimmed, and it slipped away. Exhausted, I laid back down.
I started to feel lonely again. Wishing someone had been there with me. Anyone would be okay. Wyatt, whom I love and want to grow old with, Kelly, who is my best friend and partner in crime, or even Zach, who I grew up with and haven’t had a chance to talk to in weeks!
I saw the light appear again and I thought to myself, ‘it’s not getting away this time!’ I took off running. As fast as my legs could go, I was running. The light was getting closer and closer to me! As I approached it, I stopped running as I saw something standing in the middle of it. It was enormous! Slowly, the animal started walking towards me!
I wasn’t scared though, I felt calm. Almost relaxed and comforted. I watched as this animal got closer and closer. It was a very large wolf! I have never seen one so large before. She was beautiful! She was solid grey, almost silver with a shine to her. She really glowed. With her green eyes, she was looking directly into my soul. As she got closer to me, I reached out and petted her nose. She had the softest fur I have ever felt!
“What is your name?” I asked her.
“My child, I am Raven. Your wolf!”
“You really did change! How am I seeing you here though?” I asked honestly.
“We are in your mind, and you are finally healing enough for me to come find you and bring you back home.”
“I see, and if I want to stay here?”
“That is not an option, I am afraid. We still have work to do.” Raven said, shaking her head.
“Okay, we can go then” I said sadly.
“Well, first, I must show you what happened, so when you wake up, you will remember.” Raven said, and suddenly, there was a screen playing a movie to my left. I watched as my life started playing before my eyes.
I watched as Mary was carrying me to the check point. My wounds had opened up and I was bleeding again. I was barely walking as she was practically dragging me. Someone came out of the building and started shooting. I watched as Mary took a bullet to her back and fell. As we fell, my arm landed in a bear trap, snapping around my shoulder.
“You see, you lost a lot of blood and had even more injuries. No one knew that area had traps.” I watched the scene chance to the van. The bear trap was removed, revealing several large puncture wounds around my shoulder. One of the wounds sliced down my arm and cut an artery. I was shooting blood with each weak heartbeat. Reed, Justin and another guy were in the back of the van trying to stop my bleeding.
Mary was lying next to me, but no one was attending to her. Her eyes were glazed over, and blood pooled around her. Her limp body bounced and rolled whenever the van made a sudden movement. She was dead.
“The bullet hit her spine and she bled out before you guys got to the van and they had to choose, saving you or saving Mary.”
They chose to save me. The guilt slammed into me as I reached and grabbed my chest. I started crying for her. She saved me so many times and if it wasn’t for her, I would have been caught.
The next scene shifted, and we arrived at the hospital. I was on the gurney and Reed was on top of me doing compressions as I was wheeling into a room.
“You died from blood loss, but Reed kept doing CPR. The doctors had blood ready for you and immediately started a transfer.”
Reed came out of the hospital room just in time for Wyatt to break down the hospital doors, demanding to see you. Reed intercepted but Wyatt was too far gone. Reed punched him in the face twice before Wyatt actually looked at him. “Grab the bond and hold on for dear life!” Reed shouted at Wyatt.
It was weird watching my life play out from above. I was looking down at them like it was a puppet show! Next scene was the hospital room. The doctor stitched up my arm stopping the blood loss. I had x-rays plastered on the wall. It looked like they took a picture of every inch of my body. The bones started growing back together wrong. I watched as the doctor rebroke every bone and repositioned it. The sound of the bone breaking with forever be etched into my memory. It felt like hours, the doctor broke and positioned each bone till everything looked straight. He started placing stitches in the deeper cuts that reopened and smothered antibacterial ointment on me. A tube was placed down my throat and my eyes were taped shut. Every inch of my body was black and blue. But I was alive.
“How long have I been like this?”
“Two weeks” Raven said.
“And Wyatt? He is….okay?”
“After the first punch you received, he woke up and has been feeling everything you went through. They had to give him sedation to keep him calm. He hasn’t left your side the entire time.”
I watched as the scene changed and Wyatt was either on the couch sleeping or standing by the bed, holding my hand. Sometimes whispering, sometimes yelling at me to come back to him. He pleaded and begged for me to squeeze his hand. Wyatt’s beard was thick and unruly as it stuck out in every direction.
