Fay stepped out from behind the photographer, pointing accusingly at Sylvia's gown.
Only then did Sylvia realize that, aside from a few minor details on the hemline, her dress was nearly identical to Reese's.
They were clearly from the exact same designer and collection.
Since Reese was the bride-to-be tonight, everyone else had actively avoided wearing anything from that specific line.
Everyone except Sylvia, who had unwittingly committed a massive faux pas.
Yet this dress was the exact one Reese had shipped to her.
Sylvia looked toward Reese, her gaze silently demanding an explanation.
Reese pursed her lips. "It must be a coincidence."
Fay scoffed coldly. "There are over a thousand people here today, and no one else had such a 'coincidence.' Who knows what twisted intentions she's hiding?"
Her loud accusation drew the attention of several passing guests.
Among the onlookers were plenty of people who recognized Sylvia. Their stares felt like they were roasting her over an open flame.
Sylvia knew that no matter what she said now, it would be useless.
Who would actually believe that Reese had purposely sent her an identical dress?
Reese clung tightly to Rupert's arm, forcing a smile. "Forget it. Let's go take pictures somewhere else. We still have guests to greet later."
With that, she looked up at Rupert with eager anticipation.
Rupert glanced down at her. "Alright."
He then turned and led Reese away.
Reese's brow unfurled as she gazed up at Rupert with a joyful smile.
Just before leaving, she shot a look over her shoulder, casting a highly apologetic glance at Sylvia.
Sylvia stood rooted to the spot, the carousel overhead cheerfully blasting the Wedding March.
"You really look like a desperate copycat playing the clown. What a pity... no matter how hard you try to imitate her, Rupert will always choose Reese in the end."
Fay deliberately raised her voice, making it sound like an insult, but aiming it as a public announcement. She was letting everyone know that the previous rumors were just Sylvia desperately trying to ride Rupert's coattails.
Thoroughly satisfied, Fay turned on her heel and strutted off with a smirk.
She left the rest of the guests to openly gawk at Sylvia's humiliation.
In that instant, Sylvia fully understood the true purpose of the dress Reese had sent her.
It was meant to force her to recognize her place.
Just as Sylvia braced herself for the incoming wave of malicious stares, she looked up, only to realize that the crowd around her had vanished completely at some point.
It was as if everything had just been a hallucination.
