What broke Reese's heart even more was that Rupert didn't even bother to deny it.
Her own fiancé was expending all his nervous energy on another woman.
The air froze for several long seconds before Reese buried herself in Rupert's embrace.
Rupert looked down at her, a faint trace of helplessness flashing in the depths of his eyes.
He could literally tell with a single glance exactly what kind of medication she needed to take to control her condition.
Lying in his arms, Reese inhaled his scent deeply.
This man clearly cared about her!
So why couldn't she feel an ounce of warmth from his heart?
Reese clutched his hands tightly, her voice laced with guilt. "I'm sorry. I was just too terrified of losing you. I'm truly terrified. Can't you just take pity on me? Please, don't look at her anymore!"
She buried her face in his chest, hiding her tears.
Rupert tightened his grip on the cigarette box in his pocket, staring out into the distance with an expressionless face. "Alright."
Reese froze, and a moment later, she hugged him with all her might, her tears flowing even more fiercely.
Upstairs, Sylvia happened to walk past the window and caught sight of the two figures embracing down below.
She quickly averted her gaze and walked toward the banquet hall.
Right before she entered, a staff member handed her a mask.
Sylvia received a very ordinary white mask, while Lester was given a Gothic-style... dark-eyed mask.
As she put hers on, she laughed. "Lester, didn't you get any special privileges?"
"All the guests tonight are young people from prominent families. What's the point of flexing privileges? I actually think mine matches yours perfectly," Lester replied casually.
"It does." Sylvia reached up to help him adjust it.
Lester wrapped his hand over hers, his voice dropping low. "Sylvia, I have something to tell you after the party is over."
"Okay," Sylvia replied with a gentle smile.
"Let's go."
Lester took her hand and led her into the massive hall.
The room was bustling with energy. The latest pop hits blared through the speakers, making it completely different from a stiff, formal banquet. Everyone around them was having a fantastic time.
