Chapter 417 Opportunist

“That’s fine.”

Robin looked him over once, top to bottom, then looked away. She didn’t have Erin’s ability to detect lies, but something about this man had set off every quiet alarm she had the moment she saw him.

“We pulled you out because it was convenient, not because we have any obligation to you. You’re a stranger. You know how valuable medical supplies are right now, and that scratch isn’t going to hurt you. We have no reason to help further.”

The man’s hand curled slowly into a fist at his side.

Sevyn said these people were easygoing. So why won’t they hand over a single bandage?

“Alright, alright,” he said, with a thin, uncomfortable smile. “Sorry for bothering you. Still, thank you for getting me out of there.”

Robin made a vague sound of acknowledgment without even glancing at him.

With Robin’s supplies doing their work, Ryan and Lydia both stabilized quickly.

Sevyn finally let out the breath he’d been holding since they found her.

He couldn’t get his mind around how close it had been. If these particular people hadn’t been the ones to show up, if it had been anyone else, even someone willing to help, Lydia might not have made it out of that rubble alive.

But now a new problem had replaced the old one.

Their shelter was gone. The building had collapsed, his wife and son were both seriously injured and couldn’t move, and the three of them were sitting on the open street with nowhere to go.

He stared at the ground with a knot forming between his brows.

The man from the rubble circled back before Sevyn could even finish thinking, settling in close with the studied casualness of someone pretending not to have an agenda.

“Those people are clearly something special,” the man said, as if commenting on the weather. “If they were willing to take people in, or keep helping out, things would be a whole lot easier for everyone, wouldn’t they.”

He’d already worked it out in his head.

These people Sevyn brought were exceptional, obviously powerful, and resource-rich. Getting in their good graces was the smartest play available right now.

Chapter 417 Opportunist

Finished

He was already running the numbers quietly, and a small, private regret was growing in the back of his mind.

If he’d known Sevyn would actually pull it off, would actually get his wife and child rescued, he never would have grabbed that water bottle. He never would have said what he said down there.

Lucky thing the woman and the boy were still unconscious. If they came around and started talking, today might have gone very differently for him.

Sevyn didn’t share his optimism.

Robin and her people had already gone far beyond what could reasonably be asked of strangers. Pushing further would just be freeloading.

The man shifted cheerfully. “Oh, I just realized I’ve been talking this whole time without introducing myself. I’m Geoffrey Pigston. Nice to meet you.”

Sevyn had zero interest in small talk and gave an absent nod. “Sevyn.”

His mind was already somewhere else entirely, turning over the question of where he, Lydia, and Ryan were supposed to go from here.

Then the air changed.

A surge of spiritual energy detonated nearby without warning, raw and overwhelming, spreading outward with a pressure that felt like it could shred the world apart at the seams.

Every person present reacted immediately, their faces shifting as the force hit them. Even Ella staggered slightly under the weight of it.

Only Robin stayed exactly where she was, completely steady, her eyes fixed on Henry.

She hadn’t expected this level of breakthrough, not even with the Mental Amplification Serum accelerating things.

But Henry had always been extraordinary in his own particular way, and everything she understood from her past life confirmed it: the harder an ability was to control, the more devastatingly powerful it became once mastered.

Henry was clearly that kind of person.

The aftershock of that tremendous pressure lingered for a full five minutes before it finally dissipated completely.

Henry opened his eyes slowly.

In the instant they opened, a sharp flash of silver light moved through his gaze and vanished just as quickly.
